Growing Zones
Marsh Marigold is a key plant when designing a Rain Garden. The ability of this plant to survive in boggy and seasonally flooded areas make it valuable for filtering water in zone 1. An added plus for Marsh Marigold is that it is also native to most of North America. This rhizomatous perennial attracts beneficial pollinators to its waxy yellow flowers for a long period between April and July.
Marsh Marigold is a quickly spreading ground cover that grows in even the heaviest of clay soils. The thickly growing stems do a great job of smothering out weeds and also provide shelter for wildlife. The spreading Rhizomatous roots spread easily to form lush mats of foliage. Marsh Marigold appears very similar to the weed Lesser Celandine or the common Buttercup. The key difference is the bloom time. Marsh Marigold has a 5 petaled flower, while the Buttercup has an 8 petaled flower and blooms much earlier in the spring.
Marsh Marigold Care
Marsh Marigold will tolerate a full sun position, but may dieback from the heat of late summer. Planting it in a spot that receives afternoon shade or seasonal shade from deciduous shrubs and trees will keep this perennial growing vigorously. Soils that are acidic and with more clay than sandy loam are important in keeping Marsh Marigold growing happily. Moisture levels should be kept high even after establishing. Growing this plant in a bog garden, Rain Garden or on the edge of a pond is recommended.
Fertilizing Marsh Marigold is not necessary. Pruning is also not a necessary chore. Dividing the rhizomes every 3-4 years will help keep this vigorous grower under control and blooming. Marsh Marigold is probably one of the lowest maintenance plants you can use when designing a Rain, naturalized or wildlife friendly garden.
Marsh Marigold Spacing
Marsh Marigold are quick spreading plants that can fill in a spot in less time than most other ground covers. A mature height and width of 18-24 inches seems small, but a recommended spacing of 24-30 inches on center will provide enough space for this plant to grow before dividing is necessary.
