Royal Raspberry Anise Hyssop is another excellent addition to the Meant to Bee™ series of plants from Proven Winners. Anise Hyssop is a tried and true attractant for beneficial insects and other pollinators in the garden. Hummingbirds particularly love to sip from the tubular flowers. Agastache ‘Royal Raspberry’ has an exciting combination of pale raspberry flowers with a deeper magenta calyx that stays on the stems until the first frost of fall.
Royal Raspberry Anise Hyssop not only has masses of flowers from late summer to fall, but the foliage emerges a lovely burgundy in the spring and stays pretty and disease-free all summer. Agastache is popular for fresh-cut flowers or adding dry to a potpourri mix. Royal Raspberry is a lovely addition to either an ornamental mixed seasonal container or a Mediterranean herb garden. Drought tolerant and very deer-proof, Anise Hyssop is dependable year after year to make your garden a hive of pollinating activity.
Meant to Bee™ Royal Raspberry Anise Hyssop Care
Anise Hyssop is a plant native to the prairies of North America, primarily the Midwestern and Northern United States and all of the Canadian provinces. A drought-tolerant and well-behaved member of the mint family, Anise Hyssop thrives in well-draining soil that is on the dry side. It prefers infertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Annual mulching with 2-3 inches of compost or finely shredded leaves will provide enough nutrients to the soil to support vigorous growth and profuse blooming. Plant Royal Raspberry in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of full sun daily.
Anise Hyssop is an herbaceous perennial that goes into dormancy for the winter when the top growth dies back late in the fall. To support wildlife in the garden, leave any (disease-free) spent top growth in place for the winter. The stems and leaves will insulate the growth crown, and any seeds formed will feed nonmigrating birds. In the spring, the decomposing material can be removed from the growth crown and spread evenly over the root zone of the plants. Deadheading Anise Hyssop through the summer will encourage more flower spikes to form while preventing seed formation. Dividing and replanting every 2-3 years will reinvigorate the root system and is best done early in the spring to allow new plants time to re-establish.
Meant to Bee™ Royal Raspberry Anise Hyssop Spacing
Anise Hyssop is considered a medium-height perennial and is perfect for the edges of a garden bed or a large planter as the ‘filler’. The mature height and spread are 32-36 inches when flowering. When planting with other perennials or shrubs, space plants 2 feet apart.
