Midnight Marvel Hibiscus pairs enormous scarlet-red flowers with deep wine-purple foliage for amazing color all season. The 8- to 9-inch flowers emerge from glossy, nearly black-red buds on a compact plant about 4 feet tall and 4 to 4½ feet wide. Its maple-like leaves develop their darkest purple coloring in full sun, and the flowers continue from midsummer into early fall. In our gardens, we find the foliage alone gives this hibiscus substantial presence.
This hardy perennial was bred for an extended bloom period. Buds develop at several nodes along each stem, allowing successive flowers to open over many weeks, attracting butterflies and bees. Established plants tolerate wet soil and heavy clay better than many other flowering perennials. Use it beside ponds, in rain gardens, as a summer focal point in a sunny border, or in groups where the dark foliage can carry the planting before late-season flowers appear.
Midnight Marvel Hibiscus Care
Grow Midnight Marvel Hibiscus in full sun for the darkest foliage, strongest stems, and heaviest flowering, though part shade is tolerated. It performs best in moist, organic-rich loam but also accepts clay and average garden soil when moisture remains consistent. Acidic to near-neutral soil, generally below pH 7.0, is suitable.
Water newly planted hibiscus deeply and regularly, keeping the root zone evenly moist while the plant establishes. Mature plants still perform best with dependable moisture, particularly during hot weather, and wilting leaves are a clear signal that the soil has become too dry. Apply a balanced slow-release perennial fertilizer after new growth appears in spring, with a second light feeding in early summer when soil fertility is low. Mulch the root zone to conserve moisture, and remember that hardy hibiscus emerges quite late in spring once temperatures warm.
Deadhead spent flowers when a tidier appearance is preferred, although removal is not required for continued blooming. Cut the dead stems back to about 3 to 4 inches above the ground in late fall or early spring before new shoots emerge. A heavier mulch layer during the first winter can protect the crown in colder parts of its USDA zone 4 to 9 range.
Midnight Marvel Hibiscus Spacing
Space Midnight Marvel Hibiscus about 4 to 5 feet apart so each plant has room to develop its broad summer canopy. For container growing, use a substantial pot at least 24 to 30 inches wide with drainage holes and a moisture-retentive potting mix, and expect to water frequently during summer because large leaves draw considerable moisture.
Midnight Marvel Hibiscus Companion Plants
Joe Pye weed and sedge make compatible landscape companions in moist, sunny beds. Joe Pye weed extends the pollinator season above the hibiscus and sedge covers lower ground around the planting. In a large mixed container, sweet potato vines can trail beneath the upright hibiscus while handling warm weather and the regular watering this perennial prefers.
