One of the Million Dollar series of Delphinium, Sky Hybrid Bee Delphinium brings you a shorter, more compact Delphinium. Gorgeous sky blue double or semi-double flowers crowd the spires that are suspended above the attractive dark green, deep cut foliage. A little white ‘bee’ petal pouts from the center of the flowers, giving credence to its name Bee Delphinium. While stalkier than its cousins, this delphinium will still need to be staked when in full bloom as its stems are hollow and it will flop over otherwise. A small price to pay for such a lovely perennial.
Delphiniums are a part of the buttercup family and are native to river valleys and meadows from North and Central Europe all the way to Siberia. Preferring the cooler summers of the northern regions, it is hardy in Zones 3-7, needing the vernalization that occurs during the colder winters to produce next spring’s growth. This new variety is more heat tolerant than its predecessors, tolerating the heat in regions throughout the Mid South, especially with some afternoon shade.
Million Dollar Sky Larkspur Care
Care and maintenance of Delphiniums starts with planting these heavy feeders in average to fertile soil. They prefer a neutral to alkaline soil with a pH range of 7.0 or so. They are intolerant of heavy wet soils, so amend clay soils with peat moss and sharp sand, add lime if it is too acidic and fertilize with a general purpose fertilizer throughout the season for best results. Delphiniums require an average soil moisture, so supplementing natural rainfall when it is inadequate, about 1 inch per week will be appreciated. Deer and rabbits don’t typically browse on delphinium, but bees and butterflies will find them irresistible.
Deadheading delphiniums is important to keep your plant looking tidy. Cut the stem just above the foliage when â…” of the flowers are spent. Prune out any dead or yellowed stems, and feel free to harvest some stems to bring that beautiful sky blue color into your home for your floral arrangements. This also helps to reduce crowding and limit the possibility of plant diseases from taking hold of your plant.
Million Dollar Sky Larkspur Spacing
Space your delphiniums about 18 to 20 inches apart. Good air circulation is crucial in prevention of powdery mildew. Thin crowded plants out by harvesting flowering stalks for your flower arrangements, and remove any debris off the ground immediately. Million Dollar Sky will grow to about 36 inches tall and spread out to about 24 inches. Whether you plant these in your informal cottage gardens, cutting gardens or mass them out as a landscape border, you are going to enjoy the refreshing sky blue color and texture of these double hybrid bee delphiniums.
