Miracle Fruit Tree features red berries that temporarily make sour foods taste sweet, turning lemons, limes, grapefruit, vinegar, and tart berries into a tasting experiment. Synsepalum dulcificum matures about 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide in patio and indoor containers, with glossy evergreen foliage and small white flowers. Clusters of small, cherry-red berries contain the rare flavor-changing compound miraculin in the pulp. This handsome, compact shrub is perfect for growers who enjoy unusual edible plants and want something small enough to keep close to the kitchen.
Miracle Fruit Tree Care
Plant Miracle Fruit Tree in spring, or pot it indoors any time warm room temperatures and humidity are available. Grow it in full sun to part sun outdoors or bright indirect light indoors. Set the plant at the same depth it grew in the nursery container, spacing plants 3 to 4 feet apart. Use acidic, well-drained soil with a pH of 4.5 to 5.8, such as a peat-based or pine bark-based mix that holds moisture without becoming heavy. Light pruning after harvest can shape the shrub, and extra humidity is helpful when indoor air becomes dry.
Growing Miracle Fruit Tree
Miracle Fruit Tree is slow growing and often begins producing after 3 to 4 years, with harvest commonly from May through October in warm conditions. This tree may flower and fruit multiple times per year in good conditions, and gentle hand-pollination can boost fruit set. Pick berries when they turn fully red, then use them fresh by rolling the pulp over the tongue and discarding the single seed. Extra berries can be frozen or freeze-dried, and indoor plants grow best near bright filtered light rather than hot window glass. In warm acidic garden beds, pair it with blueberry bushes outside the shrub’s immediate root zone.
Growing Miracle Fruit Tree in Containers
Miracle Fruit Tree is especially useful as a container plant for patios, greenhouses, sunrooms, and bright indoor growing spaces. Start with a 6 to 8 inch pot for a young plant, then move up gradually because oversized wet soil can slow root growth. Repot in spring when roots fill the container, refreshing the acidic mix rather than disturbing the fine roots too much. Bring containers inside before nights drop below ~50°F (generally suited to USDA Zones 10–11 outdoors).
Watering Miracle Fruit Tree
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry, then drain thoroughly. Water with rainwater or low-mineral water in hard-water regions, keeping the soil evenly damp but never swampy. Dry leaf edges, stalled growth, or dropped flowers often mean the plant dried too far, while yellowing in wet soil points to poor drainage or overwatering.
Feeding Miracle Fruit Tree
Feed lightly during spring and summer with an acid-loving plant fertilizer at a modest rate. A steady supply of mild nutrition supports leaf color, flowers, and berry formation, but heavy fertilizer can burn roots in the acidic container mix.
