Grandiflora roses are exceptionally hardy and easy to grow. Mother of Pearl™ is a selection that has gorgeous clusters of perfectly shaped flowers with a heavenly fragrance. This upright shrub rose is and is tough and dependable, being black spot resistant, hardy enough to survive winters in colder climates, and easily tolerant of heat and humidity. The fully double, apricot-colored flowers seem to glow and are set off by clean, green foliage.
Grandiflora roses are lovely to add to a cottage garden or as part of a larger rose collection. The upright growth habit needs little pruning or training. The flowers are long lasting on the shrub and in the vase and turn into highly decorative and nutritious hips in late summer. Leaving the hips on roses through the winter provides food for non-migrating birds and other wildlife.
Mother of Pearl™ Grandiflora Rose Care
Plant Mother of Pearl™ in a full sun location with well-draining soil. Mulch with 2-3 inches of organic compost or arborist chips around the root zone. The mulch will help the soil retain moisture, which roses prefer. Give newly planted roses one inch of water a week. Using drip irrigation and soaker hoses will ensure that the foliage stays dry and is less susceptible to diseases. Fertilize Grandiflora roses with a formulation specific for roses or tomatoes. The higher phosphorous content will encourage vigorous blooming over foliage growth. Apply two applications of the recommended dosage: one dose when the leaves begin to form and another when the flower buds are just breaking.
Pruning shrub roses is very easy and only needs to be done in the late winter or early spring. Cut back any dead, dying, or diseased stems from the winter. Next, cut the stems back by one-half the overall height. This will give a framework for the current season's growth. If necessary, the main stems can be cut to the ground to rejuvenate the entire shrub. Grandiflora roses benefit from being planted in a sheltered spot if you garden at the lower end of the hardiness zone. Planting Mother of Pearl™ near buildings or out of the path of prevailing winter storms will add protection from winter damage.
Mother of Pearl™ Grandiflora Rose Spacing
Mother of Pearl™ will reach a mature height of 3-4 feet with a spread of 2-3 feet. Place shrubs 40 inches apart, center on center when planting more than one. Ensure that other perennials and shrubs are placed 2 feet or more from roses to provide good air circulation and allow for root spread.
