Growing Zones
Nana Lutea Hinoki Cypress has a gorgeous golden coloring that stays constant throughout the year. The flat and convoluted branches form a slightly conical mound that takes years to reach its mature height, making this a great addition to brighten up a garden bed or grow in a container. Once Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Lutea’ is well established, it is drought tolerant and hardy in all but the coldest or hottest climates.
Nana Lutea Hinoki cypress looks fabulous paired with other dwarf conifers as part of a specialized collection or foundation planting to add a pop of sunny color and variation in shape. This dwarf conifer is resistant to pests, diseases, deer damage, and rabbit browsing. The slow but dense growth habit is bushy all of the way to the ground, making this shrub a good fit for the front of a garden border.
Nana Lutea Hinoki Cypress Care
The more sun that this dwarf Hinoki cypress receives, the brighter the foliage will be. Plant Nana Lutea in a location with at least 6 hours of sun, and in evenly moist, well-drained soil. Mulch annually with a good quality compost or other organic material that will decompose over the growing season and enrich the soil naturally.
Heavy pruning is not necessary for Nana Lutea. Over-pruning or shearing will obscure the fantastic wavy appearance of the individual branches and foliage. Light pruning can be done in mid-summer on any growth that is decidedly outside the natural shape, being careful to not cut too far back into old wood. No special winter care is required as the shrub is fully hardy in USDA growing zones 4-8.
Nana Lutea Hinoki Cypress Spacing
Dwarf Hinoki cypress has a very slow growth rate and matures to full size after 10 or more years. Its overall height of 3-5 feet and a width of 4-6 feet make for a nicely mounded shrub to plant in any size garden or even a pot for a container garden. Space each plant at least 4 feet from the center of the next when planting in a garden bed. Annually repot Nana Lutea into a container only one or two sizes larger until you reach an overall pot diameter of 18-20 inches.
