Needlepoint Holly creates a fast evergreen screen with narrow glossy leaves and bright red winter berries. Ilex cornuta 'Needlepoint' grows about 10 to 15 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide in many landscapes, with dense branching that fills in quickly for privacy. Delicate twirling leaves end in a single spine, giving the shrub a cleaner texture than many traditional hollies. We recommend it along property lines and driveway entries for height, coverage, and winter color.

This female Chinese holly cultivar is valued for heavy red berry production, often setting fruit more dependably than many hollies. Small creamy white spring flowers attract bees before the berries ripen in fall and can feed winter birds like cedar waxwings, robins, and mockingbirds. Needlepoint Holly is heat tolerant, deer resistant, moderately salt tolerant, and drought tolerant once established. Plant it as a privacy screen, hedge, windbreak, foundation anchor, specimen, property-line planting, or bird-friendly evergreen backdrop.

Needlepoint Holly Care

Plant Needlepoint Holly in full sun to partial shade, with fuller growth and heavier berry production in brighter light. It adapts to clay, loam, sandy, and rocky soils as long as drainage is good. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is preferred, and poorly drained sites can lead to root decline.

Soak the root zone at planting, then supply deep moisture once weekly during the first few months when rainfall is lacking. Mature plants tolerate heat and dry weather, but occasional deep watering during long summer drought helps maintain dense foliage and berry development. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or a formula made for hollies and acid-loving shrubs. Mulch 2 inches deep over the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition, pulling back mulch from the trunk.

Prune Needlepoint Holly in late winter or early spring for size control, hedge shaping, or small-tree training. Light trimming after the spring growth flush can refine a formal screen, while selective thinning keeps specimen plants more natural. Wear gloves when pruning because the leaf tips can prick hands, and avoid leaving berry-filled cuttings where pets or children may eat the fruit.

Space Needlepoint Holly 7 to 8 feet apart for a dense privacy screen or hedge. Allow 10 to 12 feet between plants when each shrub should mature as a broad pyramidal specimen. For containers, use a large pot at least 24 inches wide with drainage holes, and plan to move the plant into the landscape as it gains height.

In sunny privacy plantings, use Needlepoint Holly behind spirea and black-eyed Susans, which add seasonal flowers in front of the evergreen screen while tolerating similar open exposure. Fountain grass can fill the middle layer with fine texture and late-season movement beneath the holly’s dark foliage. In very large containers, use calibrachoa or sweet potato vines around the base for warm-season color while the holly supplies year-round structure.
