Growing Zones
Strikingly deep-purple, lobed foliage is the most noteworthy feature of this member of the Northern Exposure Heuchera series. This plant forms low, upright mounds that make them versatile and easy to grow in multiple ways in the landscape. Dainty white flowers appear starting in spring on stalks that rise above the leaves and attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
This deer-resistant perennial has a compact, mounding habit and few disease problems, making it perfect for a low-maintenance landscape. Several planted together form an attractive ground cover around tree plantings. The Northern Exposure Purple Coral Bells also work well as a container specimen in a shady area. The purple foliage makes an excellent addition to a mixed planter for a shady spot.
Northern Exposure Purple Coral Bells Care
This heuchera prefers partial shade; harsh sun can cause leaf scorch. At planting, make sure the top of the root mass is at or above the surrounding soil level to avoid crown rot. This plant has excellent drought tolerance once established, but benefits from supplemental water during the growing season following planting. In cold areas, a layer of organic material mulch applied around the plant in late fall prevents frost heaving the plant up.
Coral bells like this one have few pruning needs. Simply cut off spent flower stalks to keep the plant looking tidy and remove any damaged leaves in early spring or just as new growth is starting to emerge.
Northern Exposure Purple Coral Bells Spacing
The Northern Exposure purple coral bells typically have a maximum height of 10 to 12 inches not counting the flower stalk and a spread of 18 to 22 inches. Space multiple plants about 20 inches apart. Plants can be divided every 3 years or, if in a container, repotted at a similar interval.
