Northwind Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum ‘Northwind’) creates a striking vertical accent in the landscape with its upright clumping habit and elegantly arching leaves. Its steel-blue foliage transitions to a warm golden hue in autumn, while delicate, airy panicles bloom in late summer, adding subtle movement above the foliage. Reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet, this native ornamental grass remains sturdy through wind and even snow, offering winter interest and a protective habitat for songbirds. Northwind Switchgrass brings vertical drama, erosion control, and multi-season color wherever it’s planted.
Northwind Switchgrass proves remarkably low-maintenance and deer-resistant. Native to North America, it tolerates everything from sandy to clayey soils as well as mild drought once established. Use it in mass plantings for a textured display, as a backdrop in perennial borders, or to soften the edges of ponds and streams. It’s equally at home in a cottage garden, naturalized meadow, or contemporary landscape design, where its upright growth and fine, bluish-green blades deliver dependable structure.
Northwind Switchgrass Care
Plant Northwind Switchgrass in full sun (at least six hours of direct light) to ensure robust growth and minimize flopping. It adapts to a wide range of soils, from sandy to clay-rich, but prefers moderately moist, well-drained conditions. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish; once settled, it handles occasional dryness and even periodic flooding with ease. An annual spring dose of a balanced fertilizer or a top-dressing of compost can support vigorous growth, though overly rich soil may cause stems to arch. In most cases, minimal supplemental feeding is enough to keep this grass looking its best.
Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new shoots appear, trimming just above the crown. This quick clean-up encourages a fresh flush of blue-green leaves and open panicles. Container-grown specimens thrive when given ample space for root development and consistent watering. In colder zones, leaving the dried foliage standing can protect the crown from freezing temperatures and provide winter habitat for birds.
Northwind Switchgrass Spacing
For a hedge-like row or mass planting, space Northwind Switchgrass about 2 to 3 feet apart to create a cohesive yet visually distinct stand. If using as an accent or in small groupings, the same spacing prevents overcrowding and promotes healthy airflow between clumps. When container-growing, select a pot at least 12 to 14 inches in diameter, allowing the root system adequate room to spread while keeping your switchgrass upright and happy.
