Are you yearning to add some allure to your yard? If the answer is yes, consider springing for Pale Purple Coneflower! This daisy-like, sun-loving perennial consists of rust-colored disc florets surrounded by long, slender rays that fade from lavender to pink and then white, from May until July. Delicate, emerald, lanceolate foliage supports these showy blooms. Otherwise known as Echinacea pallida, Pink Coneflower, and Tall Coneflower, this wildflower attracts pollinators such as butterflies and bees. Flowers and foliage can be arranged in bouquets for the summer or dried for later use.
In addition to providing color and texture to any landscape, Pale Purple Coneflower also produces a faint perfume, adding to its allure. Delighting people’s senses of sight and smell, this compact, upright, deciduous ornamental reaches variable heights of 2 to 3 feet and widths of 1 to 2 feet. Its positive traits also include heat tolerance, drought tolerance, disease resistance, and deer resistance. Not only does this plant look graceful and charming as its purplish petals bend over time in your backyard, but it will still be standing long after your neighborhood gang of critters has rushed through your yard.
Pale Purple Coneflower Care
While Pale Purple Coneflower tolerates partial shade, it does best in full sun. In addition, this ornamental also tolerates a wide variety of soils. Its preference is for loamy, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.8 to 7.2. Provide it with at least 1 to 2 inches of water weekly, and feed this herbaceous perennial lightly twice a month with a balanced fertilizer.
A low-maintenance plant, Pale Purple Coneflower does not need frequent pruning. To encourage blooming and discourage disease, however, deadhead spent flowers. The need for additional pruning depends on whether you want to control this perennial’s spread or provide seed for hungry birds such as finches during the winter. If you want to control the spread, then cut back this ornamental after blooming. If you prefer to feed the birds, leave the last set of blooms and allow Pale Purple Coneflower to naturalize.
Pale Purple Coneflower Spacing
Pale Purple Coneflower’s allure will be multiplied many times when planted en masse in borders and beds. Space these graceful daisy-like flowers 18 to 24 inches apart. Make the pollinators beam more broadly by adding companion plants such as bee balm, phlox, and rudbeckia to this charming cut-flower ornamental.
