Lantana is a great plant for adding a punch of color to your deck or patio during the height of summer. PassionFruit Lantana has juicy and delectable ombre flowers, consisting of magenta, orange, and yellow hues. The blooms persist into the fall until the first frost. The moderate trailing habit works as a spiller element in a hanging basket or window box. Both foliage and flowers are highly scented, making it a pleasant addition to any outdoor seating area. Lantana is also highly attractive to pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds. Unlike other Lantana varieties, PassionFruit self-seeds infrequently and produces non-stop flowers.
Lantana does a lot of heavy lifting in hot and humid climates. The color never fades no matter how much sun the plant receives. The foliage remains clean and vibrant with moderate fertilizing and regular watering. Pair the trailing habit of PassionFruit Lantana with a thriller and a couple of filler plants to create a long-lasting color container. Lantana is hardy year-round in USDA zones 9-11 and can be planted out in the garden as a woody perennial. The ground-hugging growth habit makes an outstanding ground cover in a sunny garden border.
PassionFruit Lantana Care
Plant lantana where it will receive at least 6 hours of full sun exposure. It will tolerate some shade early in the morning or late in the day. Well-draining soil is important to prevent any root problems. Containers should be watered when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Feed plants every 2-3 weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer high in phosphorus to encourage heavy blooming. Look for an NPK ratio of 1-4-3.
Pinch back early growth to help the plant form a dense framework of stems that can support more flower buds. Deadheading is not needed for PassionFruit Lantana. The plant is self-cleaning and has a continuous bloom cycle.
In gardening regions with winter frost, Lantana can be grown indoors over the winter as a houseplant. It will need bright direct sun and plenty of humidity to help it through the winter months. Place the pot or basket in a south-facing window or under dedicated LED plant lights. Watering can be reduced to once every 7-10 days, and fertilizing should be stopped altogether.
PassionFruit Lantana Spacing
Lantana is quick to fill in empty spots in a container or a garden bed. The overall height and width of PassionFruit Lantana is 12-16 inches. Allow 12 inches between plants grown in the garden. Hanging baskets of at least 10 inches can accommodate one plant through an entire season.
