Electric Red Pinks are the truest red of any Dianthus. The fully double flowers cover this plant and keep blooming for weeks. Dianthus bridges the spring and summer seasons. They look equally good planted with early spring bulbs like Tulips and Daffodils or with the early summer bloomers of Cranesbill and Lady’s Mantle.
Pretty Poppers® Electric Red have semi-evergreen foliage that stays green for 4 seasons in the warmer hardiness zones. The grass-like leaves mix in well with other large leafed groundcovers.
Beneficial pollinators are attracted by the brilliant red color of the flowers to the sweet nectar.
Pretty Poppers® Electric Red Pinks Care
Dianthus is a very low maintenance perennial. They like to be planted in any spot from full sun to part shade. An average soil texture is acceptable. Well drained, moist soil is necessary. After Pinks have become established, they are very drought tolerant and need very little attention.
Deadheading the spent blooms will keep the plants producing more flowers. Pretty Poppers® Electric Red Pinks need annual fertilization in the early spring. A well balanced, slow release fertilizer is recommended. Cutting back of the whole plant in the fall will encourage new foliage growth over the winter months in the warmer hardiness zones. Dividing should be done every 3-4 years to keep Dianthus in tidy mounded shapes and to reinvigorate blooming.
Pretty Poppers® Electric Red Pinks Spacing
Pretty Popper® has a very compact growth pattern that makes them good for the front of the garden bed or even used as a taller growing groundcover. A height of 8-10 inches before blooming and a width of 12-16 inches. Spacing the plants at 12 inches, center on center, will help them to fill in quickly and make a nice, dense, weed suppressing layer.
