Prolific Kiwi is the rare hardy kiwi vine that will set fruit on its own, so you get smooth-skinned, grape-sized kiwis without giving up space for a separate pollinator. Trained on a sturdy trellis, it can run 20–25 ft. long and spread about 8–12 ft., or stay closer to 12 ft. with regular pruning in a large container. Actinidia arguta ‘Prolific’ ripens sweet green fruit blushing reddish-violet, and the skin is edible so snacking is easy right off the tree. We’ve had the best luck with it on fences and T-bars where it’s easy to keep the fruiting wood organized year to year.
Prolific Kiwi Care
Plant in early spring after the last hard freeze, setting the crown about 1–2 inches below the soil surface, and space vines about 8 ft. apart so air can move through the canopy. Give it full sun to part shade in a fertile, well-drained soil (loam is ideal) with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 5.5–7.0. This vine needs a strong trellis and regular pruning rather than deadheading, with dormant-season cuts to shape the framework and summer touch-ups to keep shoots from wandering.
Growing Prolific Kiwi
Plan on roughly 730–1,095 days from planting to your first real harvest, with fruit typically ripening in mid-fall after early-summer flowering. Prolific Kiwi needs about 300 chill hours to reset for the next season, which is why it performs well across colder winters. Train one main trunk up to the support, and keep fruiting spurs on one-year-old wood so the vine stays productive without turning into a thicket.
Growing Prolific Kiwi in Containers
Choose a 20–30 gallon pot with excellent drainage and a permanent support system in the container, since mature vines get heavy when they’re carrying fruit. Repot every 2–3 years or top-dress with fresh mix and compost to keep roots healthy and growth steady. For container companions, pair with basil plants, thyme, and strawberry plants for an edible patio arrangement. When growing in the landscape, try lavender, blueberry bushes, and Shasta daisies nearby for color and contrasting height.
Watering Prolific Kiwi
Water deeply 1–2 times per week during establishment. Later, keep moisture steady through flowering and fruit development, letting the top few inches of soil dry slightly between soakings. Leaf curl and slowed new growth can indicate drought stress. Avoid consistently wet soil, which raises the risk of root and crown rot.
Feeding Prolific Kiwi
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, and lightly again after fruiting to support next year’s wood. Go easy with high-salt synthetic fertilizers and always water after feeding, since kiwi vines can show leaf burn when nutrients are too concentrated.
