Growing Zones
Prolific Kiwi is a self-fertile kiwi vine that brings big harvests to small spaces. Expect loads of sweet-tart, bite-size fruit on a vigorous, glossy-leaved vine that’s easy to train on a trellis, fence, or arbor.
It wakes up with fragrant spring bloom, sets heavily in summer, and ripens clusters from late summer into fall. Use it to shade a pergola, soften a privacy screen, or add edible interest to patios and side yards.
Prolific Kiwi Care
Give Prolific Kiwi full sun for 6–8+ hours daily. Plant in well-drained soil enriched with compost; slightly acidic to neutral pH 5.5–7.0 is ideal. Water deeply when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry—about weekly the first year; established vines need consistent moisture during bloom and fruit swell.
Mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch a few inches off the crown. Feed in early spring and again in early summer with a balanced, slow-release fruit tree fertilizer.
Prune in late winter to set your main cordon(s) and remove crowded wood, then tip-prune in midsummer to keep canes tidy and focus energy on fruit. Self-fruitful, though a second kiwi nearby can increase yields. Typically hardy in Zones 5–9; protect tender spring shoots from late frost with a light cover on cold nights.
Container friendly in warm regions; overwinter pots in a sheltered spot where temperatures stay above 20°F (-6°C).
Prolific Kiwi Spacing
For a specimen on a trellis or fence, allow 8–10 feet of linear space per vine and plant at least 3 feet from walls for airflow. On an arbor or pergola, space vines 8–12 feet on center and train one or two main leaders along wires. Keep 3–4 feet back from paths to allow for seasonal growth and easy picking.
In containers, start with a 16–20 inch wide pot (7–10 gallons) with excellent drainage; size up to 20–24 inches (15–25 gallons) as vines mature. Install sturdy support at planting and tie new shoots as they grow.
