This one has it all! Looks, fragrance, taste, color...the list goes on. Golden Delicious Golden Leaved Pineapple Sage is the perfect accent plant in your landscape or large container garden. Its slightly hairy, chartreuse green foliage, red-tinged on new growth, is the focal point here. It is an herb with many culinary uses, too, as well as being a fragrant addition to your potpourri when dried. What is not to love about this?

Primarily grown as an annual in most regions of the United States, this Zone 9 to 11b perennial is native to Mexico and Guatemala where it grows as a small shrub in the higher elevations. Here in Zones 2-7 you can set it out after the danger of the last frost has passed. In warmer long season regions of the U.S. you may be gifted with the appearance of fiery red flowers reminiscent of lobelia.

Proven Accents Rockin' Golden Delicious Salvia Care

Plant pineapple sage in full sun although it will appreciate some light afternoon shade in extremely hot climates. It is heat and drought tolerant. It prefers a rich, well-draining humus soil, pH 5.5 to 6.2, that is evenly moist. Fertilize once in the season for landscape plantings, and on a regular 3 to 4 week regimen for container plants. It will retain its chartreuse lime green leaf color when planted in full sun, and will turn a darker green in shade.

Deadheading is not necessary as there is nothing to gain by doing so. Pinching back when first planted will encourage branching, but pineapple sage will take it from here, spreading out along the ground by underground roots and quickly filling your space. Container planting will help control this rampant growth and its lime green foliage compliments many rich dark foliage annuals as well as a plethora of bloom colors from other sun loving annuals.

Proven Accents Rockin' Golden Delicious Salvia Spacing

Proper spacing is crucial here given its tendency to spread. Growing up to 48 inches in one season, and spreading 24 to 36 inches wide, it will quickly take over a garden bed so be bold when planting it with other larger annuals that can hold their own, or consider mass planting the sage by itself. It tolerates deer browsing without much damage and is attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies.
