Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush stays just 1–2 feet tall and wide, yet produces thick, saturated pink flower spikes that pack a punch. The blooms are full-sized for the species, tightly packed, and pleasantly fragrant from summer until frost. No deadheading is required to keep it blooming. This is one of our favorite shrubs for sunny spots with limited room for spread.
Part of the Pugster® series, Buddleia 'SMNBDFRI' was bred for stocky stems, improved cold hardiness, and consistent rebloom on new wood. It handles heat and short dry spells once established. Butterflies and bees flock to the nectar-rich flowers, but deer and rabbits usually show little interest. Its low profile works especially well as repeated edging, a compact pollinator grouping, or a flowering accent in gardens with limited planting depth.
Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush Care
Plant Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush in full sun with at least six hours of direct light each day. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly during winter, and average to lean soil is suitable. A slightly acidic to neutral pH between approximately 6.0 and 7.5 supports healthy growth.
Water regularly through the first season, allowing the surface to dry slightly between deep soakings. Established plants tolerate short dry spells, though wilting leaves indicate that irrigation is overdue. Apply a light dose of balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring; heavy feeding may produce excess foliage at the expense of flowers. In clay soil, set the crown slightly above the surrounding grade and keep mulch clear of the main stems.
Wait until new buds begin swelling in spring before pruning, since butterfly bushes can emerge later than neighboring shrubs. Cut stems back by one-half to two-thirds, making each cut just above a strong pair of healthy buds. Leave the plant standing through fall and winter in colder regions, and remove dead or damaged wood once spring growth confirms which stems are living.
Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush Spacing
Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart for low edging, small groupings, or a continuous band of summer flowers. One shrub fits comfortably in a 14- to 16-inch container with large drainage holes and a coarse, fast-draining potting mix. Check container moisture during hot weather, then let the upper portion of the mix dry before watering again.
Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush Companion Plants
Pair Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush with salvia and tickseed in sunny borders, where their extended bloom seasons and moderate water needs suit the same conditions. Sedum makes a practical lower companion near the edge of the planting because it tolerates dry soil and adds a contrasting leaf shape. In a mixed container, calibrachoa can trail over the rim while the butterfly bush forms the flowering center, provided the pot drains rapidly and is watered only after the surface begins to dry.
