Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush stays just 1–2 feet tall and wide, yet produces thick, saturated pink flower spikes that pack a punch. The blooms are full-sized for the species, tightly packed, and pleasantly fragrant from summer until frost. No deadheading is required to keep it blooming. This is one of our favorite shrubs for sunny spots where every square foot counts.
Part of the Pugster® series, Buddleia 'SMNBDFRI' was bred for stocky stems, improved cold hardiness, and consistent rebloom on new wood. It handles heat and short dry spells once established. Butterflies and bees flock to the nectar-rich flowers, while deer and rabbits usually move on. Its tidy, mounded habit makes it as useful in a container as it is lining a walkway.
Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush Care
Plant in full sun—six or more hours daily—to keep stems compact and blooms abundant. Excellent drainage is essential, especially in winter, and soil pH can range from slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0–7.5. In heavier ground, set the crown slightly above surrounding soil to prevent moisture from settling at the base. Water regularly during the first season, then reduce frequency and allow the soil to dry between soakings. A light feeding in early spring with a balanced shrub fertilizer supports new growth and heavy flowering.
Because Pugster Pico Punch™ blooms on new growth, wait until spring when green buds begin to swell, then cut back to just above a strong set of buds. In colder regions, resist the urge to prune in fall. This variety emerges later than many shrubs, so patience in spring is key.
Pugster Pico Punch™ Butterfly Bush Spacing
Space plants 1–2 feet apart for edging or low mass plantings in landscape design. For container planting, one shrub fills a 14–16 inch pot nicely and maintains a rounded profile. In sunny borders, combine it with blanket flowers for warm-toned contrast, agastache for extended pollinator appeal, and dianthus to echo the pink hues and create a cohesive front-of-bed display.
