Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum keeps its color story strong, opening with burgundy new growth in spring before settling into deep purple foliage for the warm months. The evergreen leaves of Loropetalum chinense 'Shang-hi' form a rounded, compact shrub that nicely fits hedges, foundation plantings, and containers. In mid spring, pink spider-like flowers sit above the foliage, and a lighter repeat bloom may appear in fall when the plant is growing well. Our garden designer likes it most as an anchor near entries, where it gives structure and unique color year-round.

This Southern Living selection was chosen for a denser, more manageable habit than traditional loropetalums. Its fine-textured oval leaves and multi-stemmed form give mixed shrub beds a clean outline, and the evergreen purple canopy provides winter color in Zones 7-10. Hardy to about 0°F to 10°F, it handles heat but should receive regular water through midsummer dry spells, especially in containers. Use Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum as a low hedge, edging shrub, mass planting, slope planting, or upright container centerpiece where burgundy-purple foliage can carry the planting after spring flowers finish.

Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum Care

Plant Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum in full sun to partial shade, giving it partial shade or afternoon protection in hot climates to reduce midsummer stress. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil that stays average to evenly moist rather than wet. Choose neutral to acidic soil, with mildly acidic conditions preferred for stronger foliage color and nutrient uptake.

Water newly planted shrubs deeply whenever the top few inches of soil begin to dry, since young loropetalums resent drying out during establishment. After the first season, water less often but soak thoroughly during long dry periods, and watch for leaves that curl or crisp at the edge as a sign the plant is too dry. Feed in late winter or early spring with an acid-forming slow-release fertilizer, and follow by watering around the root zone. A 1- to 2-inch mulch layer helps cool the soil and protects roots in colder or exposed sites.

Prune Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum after spring flowering, making selective cuts back to side branches rather than shearing every stem flat. Remove winter-damaged wood when growth resumes, and avoid heavy pruning in late winter because that can remove the spring flower display. Container specimens may need root-zone protection when temperatures approach the lower end of its range, since pots chill faster than garden soil.

Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum Spacing

Space Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum 4 to 5 feet apart for a connected hedge or mass, and 5 to 6 feet apart when each shrub needs its own rounded outline. For containers, start with a pot at least 20 to 24 inches wide with drainage holes, then move up as the root ball fills the mix. Use an acidic, well-drained potting blend and check moisture more often in summer because container-grown shrubs dry faster than those in beds.

For sunny beds, pair Purple Diamond™ Loropetalum with salvia, black-eyed Susans, agapanthus, or fountain grass for heat tolerance, bloom contrast, and well-drained soil compatibility. Distylium and boxwoods make good evergreen partners and provide steady structure around the darker loropetalum foliage. In large containers, combine it with sweet potato vines, African daisy, or alyssum so the planting has trailing texture and seasonal flowers without crowding the shrub’s base.
