Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi is a vining stunner with some seriously good looks that can also produce tasty kiwi fruit. Broad green textured heart-shaped foliage will turn a bronzy red during the fall. This is a twining vine that will naturally wrap itself around a trellis or support to hold on. It has green colored blooms that appear before the fruit is produced.
This fast-growing shrub blooms in March, with fruit ripening in August. Actinidia kolomikta is a female variety that will need to be planted near a male selection ('Arctic Beauty’) to produce a small, thin-skinned sweet fruit crop. One male shrub can pollinate up to 8 female plants, with each female plant producing 10 to 15 pounds of fruit.
Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi Care
Plant Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi in the spring after there is no longer a chance of frost. Place in full sun to partial shade and use well-drained soil that is acidic to neutral. Trim the plant during the winter, although excessively long shoots can be cut back during the summer.
Growing Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi
This vining shrub is primarily grown for its showy foliage but will produce fruit after 2 to 3 years when grown near a male plant. The vine will reach 12 to 15 feet tall and spread out equally wide. Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi can be grown in a container. This perennial is hardy in zones 3 through 8, so it can handle winter conditions.
Growing Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi in Containers
Plant this beauty in beds or borders near a trellis or support. The showy foliage makes this a wonderful specimen plant. A 10- to 12-inch pot is large enough for one plant.
Watering Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi
New plants will require weekly watering, but established plants can depend on rainfall to stay hydrated. Water during a dry spell to keep the plant lush and healthy.
Feeding Red Beauty Hardy Kiwi
This vigorous grower does not require fertilization. A layer of organic compost or a slow-release fertilizer applied during the spring can support new growth.
