Neverending blooms are a reality with this clematis. Rosalie™ Donahros Clematis is a brilliantly pink-colored vine that is compact and produces blooms from June to September with little maintenance. Along with intensely pink colored flowers, this clematis has a compact habit that makes it ideal for smaller spaces or container gardening. The large flowers look amazing on the plant and in cut-flower arrangements.

Clematis vines, with their flamboyant flowers, are the divas of most cottage gardens and can be a bit intimidating to new gardeners. The secret is to plant a type 2 Clematis like Rosalie™, which is the easiest ornamental vine to grow. Few pests or diseases are an issue and deer rarely browse on the surprisingly woody stems. Rosalie™ Clematis maintains a compact climbing habit and only needs to be tied loosely to a trellis or some other support to stay upright. Use Rosalie™ to clothe the sides of a shed or ramble delicately through more sturdy climbing roses and small trees.

Rosalie™ Donahros Clematis Care

Plant this clematis with the vines in full sun and the roots shaded by other perennials and small shrubs. Well-draining soil and moderate fertility is a must for healthy growth. A sandy loam soil is ideal, although any non-compacted soil can be amended with organic matter to make it friable and more moisture retentive. Mulch annually to help insulate the roots in winter and aid in weed suppression during the growing season. Plant clematis so that its growth buds are below the surface of the soil in case the plant needs to be cut back hard. This ensures that the plant can regrow vigorously.

Clematis vines are classified by the types of seasonal pruning they require. Rosalie™ Clematis is in the type 2 category and blooms best on older wood, but also blooms lightly late in the season on newer growth. That means that Rosalie™ needs pruning late in the winter when the overall structure can be easily seen without foliage. Prune lightly to keep the vines in the bounds of a trellis or other support and then cut out any dead or damaged vines as far back to the main stem as possible. Deadheading the earliest blooms will ensure that flowers continue to form through the summer.

Rosalie™ Donahros Clematis Spacing

Rosalie™ Donahros Clematis reaches 7-8 feet tall at maturity, with a narrow spread of 2 feet. Perennials, annuals, and shallow-rooted shrubs can be planted within 16 inches of the vine's base. This allows space for easy maintenance and good air circulation around all plants.

Plant Clematis in a container either as the thriller on a support or as a spiller for large planters. The root ball will require a pot with at least a 12-inch diameter to grow clematis on its own.
