Choose Scrumdidleyumptious Itoh Peony for peony flowers that look couture but behave like a sturdy landscape perennial. It tosses out 6-inch semi-double to double blooms in creamy yellow brushed with pink and finished with a faint darker edge. What sets it apart from many peonies is how floriferous it gets once established, thanks to extra lateral buds per stem that stretch bloom time beyond the usual quick peony show. We’ve noticed the stems hold the flowers up cleanly without staking, which is a relief in spring storms.
This Itoh (intersectional) peony combines tree-peony style flowers with herbaceous dieback in winter. The foliage is dark green and notably durable for a peony, staying attractive and dense long after the blooms finish. The shrub matures around 2–3 ft. tall and 2–3 ft. wide. Its gentle fragrance and strong stems make it a legitimate cutting flower that still looks full and finished outdoors. Expect midseason flowering, typically May into June depending on your zone, with the clump improving year after year when left undisturbed.
Scrumdidleyumptious Itoh Peony Care
Grow Scrumdidleyumptious in full sun to part sun, with at least 6 hours of direct light for best bloom, and a bit of afternoon shade in hotter regions to help flowers last longer. Plant in loose, fertile soil with excellent drainage and a near-neutral pH around 6.5–7.0. Set the crown (eyes) shallow, about 1–2 inches below the soil surface, because peonies planted too deep can sulk and skip flowering.
Water thoroughly at planting to settle soil and then keep irrigation minimal until you see active spring growth, since dormant peony roots dislike staying wet. During the growing season, water deeply when the top few inches dry and avoid frequent shallow watering that keeps the crown damp. Top-dress with compost in spring around the root zone (not over the crown), and it will die back to the ground after frost like other herbaceous perennials.
After flowering, remove spent blooms by cutting the stem just below the flower while leaving as much foliage as possible to feed next year’s buds. In fall, cut stems back to near ground level after a hard frost and remove debris from the area for cleaner spring growth. If you ever need to move it, do it in fall and disturb the roots as little as possible.
Scrumdidleyumptious Itoh Peony Spacing
Space plants 24–36 inches apart so air can move through the clump and the foliage dries quickly after rain. In containers, a 20–24 inch pot with drainage gives the roots the depth they need and keeps the plant stable when it’s loaded with blooms.
In the garden, pair Scrumdidleyumptious with hardy geranium and coneflower for a long season of flower color around the peony’s bold spring show. In pots, combine it with nemesia and petchoa to keep the container looking full once the peony finishes blooming.
