Feature

Thyme is a classic herb in savory foods like soup, stews, and roasts. This Mediterranean herb adds tremendous ornamental value in a garden bed or mixed seasonal plant container. Silver Edge Thyme has fine foliage with lovely silvery edging that makes the whole plant pop against a background of other shades of green. The flavor of Thymus citrodorous 'Argenteus' is less intense than other varieties but has a lovely lemony taste that gives a lift to any dish it is used. The flowers of Thyme attract all manner of beneficial pollinators and make beautiful garnishes in the kitchen.

Silver Edge Thyme Care

Plant Silver Edged Thyme in full sun with well-draining soil. Thyme tolerates a wide variety of soil textures, even heavy clay, as long as it drains well. Plant small starts as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring, or grow it in containers filled with an all-purpose potting mix. Pots should be at least an 8-inch diameter to grow a single plant comfortably. Regular snipping for use will help to keep the Thyme in a mounded shape and produce more fresh young shoots. Rejuvenation pruning of overgrown Thyme is possible, although the plant will need at least one growing season to recover. When cutting into a woody older stem, cut just above a visible leaf bud for the best results.

Growing Silver Edge Thyme

Silver Edge Thyme can be harvested shortly after planting and throughout the years. Growing Thyme in the house over the winter will ensure leaves for fresh use no matter how much snow is on the ground outside. Silver Edged Thyme reaches a mature size of 10 inches wide and 24 inches wide and makes for an unusual groundcover or garden edging. Propagation is done by soft and hardwood cuttings through the summer. After growing the cuttings for at least a year in a protected location, they will be ready to grow in the garden.

Plant Thyme in a container with lots of drainage holes. Wet roots are killers for Mediterranean plants like Thyme. Water the pots when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry, and let them dry between sessions. Place pots in a south-facing window indoors to provide as much light as possible. Repotting with fresh potting mix in the spring will reinvigorate plants for the growing season.

Watering Silver Edge Thyme

Thyme prefers drier soil and is quite drought tolerant. Allow for one inch of water a week, either via natural rain or supplemental irrigation. After that, Thyme will only require extra watering during extended periods of dry weather.

Feeding Silver Edge Thyme

Herbs generally require very little fertilizing. Overfeeding will encourage leggy growth that tends to be less flavorful. Herbs that grow in leaner soil have high concentrations of volatile oils that give them flavor.
