The Slowmound Mugo Pine or Pinus mugo 'Slowmound' is a compact, evergreen shrub. The upright branches bear 1.5 to 2" long, twisting needles. This is a dense plant that provides a thick carpet of greenery. This conifer is easy to grow and provides color and texture throughout the year.
The dense, compact, mounding growth habit makes this shrub excellent for foundation plantings and small spaces. The Slowmound Mugo Pine is a hardy plant that can easily handle the heat of summer and the chill of winter. Apply mulch around the base of the plant to protect the roots that grow close to the surface. Grow this easy evergreen in zones 3 through 8.
Slowmound Mugo Pine Care
Plant the Slowmound Mugo Pine in full to partial sun for best results. This plant is not picky about soil but prefers rich soil that is well drained. New plants need consistent moisture, but established Mugo Pines can dry out between waterings. While this plant is drought tolerant, give it water during a hot, dry spell to keep it happy and healthy. A layer of organic mulch spread around the base of the plant will provide extra nutrition.
The Slowmound Mugo Pine is a slow grower and will naturally maintain a compact shape, so pruning is not typically necessary. Create a dense plant by trimming the new candles at the branch tips in spring.
Slowmound Mugo Pine Spacing
The Slowmound Mugo Pine has a branched, compact form. Mature plants stand 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Space these pines 2.5 to 3 feet apart to create a low hedge.
