Juncus effusus, or Soft Rush as it is commonly known, is a wetland plant that is loved by wildlife. Growing to around two feet high, Soft Rush develops tall green stems that are perfect for adding architectural form and height around ponds or bogs. In midsummer, small golden flowers appear at the top of the stems and if left, provide valuable food for the birds in the fall.
Suitable for growing in zones 2 to 9 and native to North America, Soft Rush develops clumps over time. Along with wetlands and ponds, this evergreen is perfect for growing in meadows and rain gardens. Generally, pest-free, Soft Rush can even tolerate some intermittent dry conditions if necessary.
Soft Rush Care
You can grow Soft Rush in either full or partial sun as long as the ground is moist. It can also be planted in shallow water up to 6 inches deep. Soft rush prefers a neutral to acidic soil and can spread through its rhizomes or seed. Removing the flowers can help prevent any unwanted self-seeding.
Soft Rush needs minimal care. In spring, you can remove any unsightly brown stems as required. You can propagate Soft Rush by division in spring.
Soft Rush Spacing
When mature, Soft Rush can grow to two feet tall and three feet across. A spacing of 2 to 4 feet is recommended when planting Soft Rush as a group.
