Springtime is traditionally bulb time. This Iceland Poppy might make you believe that springtime is Poppy time! Beautiful clear yellow blooms explode from fat flower buds in April and continue their show to early summer. Spring Fever Yellow Iceland Poppy is perennial and equally at home in the garden bed as in a container. The billowy blooms would pair well with other spring favorites as tulips or early summer bloomers like Hardy Geranium.
Papavers form nice compact mounds of slightly fuzzy leaves. From this mound the flower stem rises up to 12 inches, making this plant great for the front of a garden border or in a container.
Papaver nudicaule are native to Sub-Arctic North America and Asia despite its common name Iceland Poppy. This hardy perennial is a great attractor of pollinators in the late spring garden. Spring Fever Yellow Iceland Poppy is bothered by few pests or diseases and is deer resistant.
Spring Fever Yellow Iceland Poppy Care
Iceland poppies appreciate well drained soil that is on the drier side. They will benefit from a balanced slow release fertilizer as growth starts in the Spring. The pH should be neutral between 6.0 - 7.0. Full sun to partial shade will keep them happy with the most blooms.
Deadheading of Iceland poppies will help it to keep blooming later in the season. Papaver nudicaule is classified as a tender perennial or sometimes even as a biennial. This means that it sets seed in the second year after blooming. Cutting off these blooms before they can mature into seed will trick the plant into forming more flowers. Clean up of old foliage can be left until very early spring when the new growth just starts to show. This is not only a good way to help see where the plants are in the spring so they are not damaged, but to also give any seedlings a chance to grow. Any unwanted seedlings are easily weeded early in the spring.
Spring Fever Yellow Iceland Poppy Spacing
With a height of 10-12 inches and a spread of 6- 8 inches Iceland poppies can be placed quite close together. Spacing of 6 inches will give a full look that is dramatic in the best way possible. Container grown poppies can be placed right next together to act as a great filler plant.
