Star Jasmine Vine perfumes warm gardens with white, star-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer. Trachelospermum jasminoides is an evergreen, twining vine with glossy dark green leaves that may turn bronze in cooler weather. The fragrant blooms draw bees and butterflies, and the vine can reach 10 to 20 feet with support. Our landscape designer often places it near patios, gates, and porch rails, where the scent can drift through daily traffic areas.
This vine is native to China and Japan and is not a true jasmine, despite the familiar common name. It handles heat, coastal exposure, and dry spells once established, making it useful across warm-region landscapes. Star Jasmine Vine climbs trellises, arbors, fences, and porch screens, and it can also be clipped as a groundcover or grown in a large container.
Star Jasmine Vine Care
Plant Star Jasmine Vine in full sun to partial shade, with more sun encouraging the heaviest flower set. It grows best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil and should not sit in soggy ground. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal, especially when plants are grown in containers.
Water deeply after planting and keep the soil evenly moist through the first growing season. Established plants tolerate dry spells, but they flower and cover better with occasional deep watering during hot, dry weather. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer if growth is light or the soil is lean. In colder parts of its range, mulch the root zone and expect some bronze foliage during winter.
Prune Star Jasmine Vine after its main bloom period so you do not cut off the best spring flower show. Shorten long runners, remove damaged stems, and guide young shoots onto their support while they are flexible. Its milky sap can be sticky when pruned, so clean tools after cutting and wear gloves if your skin is sensitive. In climates colder than Zone 8, grow it in a container and overwinter it in a bright, protected space.
Star Jasmine Vine Spacing
Space Star Jasmine Vine about 4 to 5 feet apart when using it as a groundcover or broad wall covering. For trellises, arbors, or fence panels, use one plant every 4 to 6 feet depending on how quickly you want coverage. In containers, choose a pot at least 16 to 20 inches wide with drainage holes, and provide a trellis or obelisk at planting time.
For a fragrant sunny entry planting, let Star Jasmine Vine climb behind rosemary and lavender, which share its preference for sun and well-drained soil. Along a fence or arbor, roses can flower nearby while the jasmine supplies evergreen coverage between bloom cycles. In large containers, use thyme or calibrachoa around the base, making sure the soil drains freely and the vine has room to climb.
