Growing Zones
The recent advances in panicle hydrangeas make this one of the most carefree shrubs to grow in your garden. Strawberry Sundae Hydrangea Tree is not only a dependable late-season bloomer but its vertical form is perfect for the back of a garden border or a container to decorate your patio or deck. The large panicle flowerheads appear bright white and age to a dreamy strawberry hue. This amazing tree-form hydrangea will add interest to any outdoor space.
Hydrangea paniculata is the most reliable blooming hydrangea, exploding with dense flowerheads late in the summer, well after other shrubs have finished for the year. The large leaves remain clean and evenly colored until fall and make for a great backdrop for earlier blooming shrubs or perennials. Strawberry Sundae Hydrangea Tree blooms on new growth, which means that any winter damage or early season pruning does not reduce the amount of flowers you will enjoy later in the season.
Strawberry Sundae Hydrangea Tree Care
Hydrangea trees require the same growing conditions as shrub hydrangeas. Plant them in rich, well-draining soil that retains moisture. Full sun is perfectly acceptable for this hydrangea and will ensure the best color retention in the flowers. The Strawberry Sundae Hydrangea tree is grafted onto winter hardy rootstock with no need for specialized treatment or protection. A fertilizer for acid-loving garden plants should be applied early in the spring as the new buds begin to show. Mulching with organic compost or shredded arborist chippings aids in suppressing annual weeds that compete for moisture in garden soils.
Light pruning in the spring will keep your hydrangea tree compact. Snip back spent flowers and stems to a pair of leaf buds to avoid naked stems poking out. The flowerheads are very long-lived and in some years will remain on the tree through the winter. They also make great dried flowers for indoor display, holding their shape and color exceptionally well.
Strawberry Sundae Hydrangea Tree Spacing
The overall height of Strawberry Sundae is 6-8 feet with a canopy spread of 6-8 feet. Plant at least 10 feet away from any structures, so that the tree can bloom on all sides. Perennials and other shorter shrubs can be planted at least 12 inches from the base of the hydrangea tree to reduce root competition. Use a container with at least an 8-10 gallon capacity (20-inch diameter) to offset the top-heavy shape of this tree.
