Summer Jazz™ Sunrise Gold Trumpet Vine (Campsis × tagliabuana ‘Takarazuka Yellow’) stands out with true trumpet-vine flowers without the runaway size. It tops out around 6–8 feet tall and 4–8 feet wide with pruning control and still looks lush on a small trellis. Its peach-to-golden yellow trumpets with deep orange-red throats show up in heavy flushes for a long season, which is rare in a compact Campsis. We are recommending it to homeowners who want hummingbird action on a patio structure but don’t want to spend the next five years battling an oversized vine.
This deciduous flowering vine was selected for a more restrained habit than traditional trumpet vines, while retaining their well-known heat tolerance and toughness. The dark green foliage sets off the golden blooms, and the tubular flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies from mid-spring into fall. Use it to dress up a short fence panel, a mailbox-sized trellis, or a small garden arch where you want repeat color without swallowing the structure. Summer Jazz™ Sunrise Gold also works as a mounded, arching plant if you let it grow without support, which can be handy on a sunny slope that needs coverage.
Summer Jazz™ Sunrise Gold Trumpet Vine Care
Plant this trumpet vine in full sun to mostly sun for the best bloom count; it will tolerate part shade, but flowering drops as shade increases. Give it moist but well-drained soil in clay, loam, sand, or silt, with a pH of 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to slightly alkaline). Avoid low spots that stay soggy, because consistent wet feet can stress the roots even though the plant handles dry spells once established.
Water deeply and regularly the first season, then let the top few inches of soil dry slightly between soakings. Once established, trumpet vine is more forgiving and can handle average-to-low water. A light feeding in spring with a slow-release fertilizer is plenty, as overly rich nitrogen can push leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Expect it to drop leaves and go dormant for winter in colder zones, then rebound with fresh growth when temperatures warm.
Prune in late winter to early spring before active growth to manage size and keep the framework tidy, focusing on thinning crowded stems and shortening wayward shoots. If you see shoots emerging at the base, remove them promptly to keep the plant trained to its support and to maintain the narrower footprint. In containers, choose a sturdy trellis and plan to refresh the top layer of potting mix each spring to keep growth steady.
Summer Jazz™ Sunrise Gold Trumpet Vine Spacing
Space plants 5–6 feet apart along a fence or structure so each vine has room to fill in without becoming a tangled mass. For pots, start with a 20–24 inch container (larger if you want fewer waterings) and use a heavy support since the stems get woody with age. For landscape pairings, contrast the warm flower tones with blue-purple bloomers like lupine or lavender, and add midseason lift nearby with coneflower. In container mixes, tuck in calibrachoa at the rim and add coleus for foliage contrast beneath the vine’s dark green leaves.
