If you’re looking for an elegant perennial to lend a bright spot to your summer garden, Sunfisher Siberian Iris, or Iris sibirica 'Sunfisher' is an excellent option. This colorful Iris has upright, pastel yellow standards and deep yellow signals and falls. This beardless beauty grows in clumps of slender, contrasting green leaves that produce hardy stems up to 28 inches tall, each holding between 2 to 5 flowers. The Sunfisher is one of the first Siberians to bloom in late spring and then rebloom in early fall. It is a tough, flexible plant that spreads from 18 to 24 inches and makes an excellent cut flower.
Native to Europe and Asia, the Sunfisher is a low-maintenance, sun-loving option for any budding gardener. It is a beautiful, practical option for erosion control, and its bright blooms attract hummingbirds. It is resistant to both deer and rabbits, as well as common diseases that plague other varieties of Iris.
Sunfisher Siberian Iris Care
The Sunfisher Siberian Iris prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial sun in hot climates. In order to grow, it needs moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. However, this variety of Siberian can also grow well in wetter sites with moist to wet soil. The Sunfisher is salt tolerant and is a great option for seaside cottages or other regions with salty air or soil.
In colder areas, The Sunfisher Siberian Iris should be planted in early spring to late summer. In milder areas, it is better to plant in the fall. This variety should be water liberally after planting until it is well-established.It will need consistent watering throughout the season. In the fall, prune away dead foliage.
Sunfisher Siberian Iris Spacing
The Sunfisher Siberian Iris should be spaced 1 to 2 feet apart. They are an excellent choice for perennial gardens and sunny walkways. Place them next to a water feature, creek or pond. They are beautiful when planted en masse as a focal point, or to be used as cut flowers. Siberian Irises bloom before Japanese irises, but after tall bearded varieties.
