Rhododendron ‘Sunglow’ is sure to make a bold statement in your spring garden! This impressive shrub becomes covered in clusters of intensely colored blossoms in spring. The tubular, bright reddish-pink flowers attract pollinators while adding vibrant color to your landscape. The glossy, evergreen leaves provide year-round interest even after the flowers have faded.
Sunglow Azalea is low maintenance and disease resistant. It is rather compact, growing 3-4’ tall and wide. Its size makes this shrub perfect for filling spaces in mixed borders and foundation plantings. Sunglow Azalea also makes an eye-catching evergreen hedge and is well suited for growing along woodland edges.
Sunglow Azalea Care
Sunglow Azalea grows best when it receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Like all azaleas, Sunglow Azalea thrives in acidic soil. Alkaline soils may cause chlorosis (yellowing) of leaves due to nutrient deficiencies. Apply a fertilizer formulated for acidic-loving plants in early spring to feed the plant and help acidify the soil. Sunglow Azalea needs moist, rich, and well-drained soil. Incorporate a few inches of organic matter into the soil at planting time. Apply 2-3 inches of mulch to help maintain soil temperature and moisture.
Sunglow Azalea is low maintenance and will rarely need pruning or additional care. However, occasional pruning can help shape the shrub and improve air circulation to interior branches. Azaleas should be pruned in spring once flowering has finished to prevent trimming off developing flower buds. Remove any crossing branches, dead wood, or unwanted growth.
Sunglow Azalea Spacing
Plant Sunglow Azalea 4-6 feet apart. The lower end of that range is ideal for mass plantings and hedges, while spacing can be increased for mixed plantings.
