Sunmagic® Vintage Lipstick Coneflower actually looks full and finished, because it branches hard from the crown and sets an even canopy of blooms instead of a few tall stems. It tops out around 18–24 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, a compact mound that’s easy to repeat in drifts. Compared with many coneflowers that flower in spurts, this one keeps fresh hot-pink flowers coming from July through September with a steadier, higher flower count. We are loving for big coneflower color in the front-to-middle of a bed without the “bare ankles” look later in summer.
This Echinacea is an herbaceous perennial selected for heavy branching and strong summer bloom on a neat frame. The bold petals surround dark centers that draw bees and butterflies, and the seed heads can be left to stand into fall for birds once flowering slows. Use it to build a wave of color along a walkway, to punch up a mixed border where grasses and softer textures need contrast, or to keep a patio container blooming with less upkeep. It’s also a reliable cut-flower option since stems hold up well when harvested early in the day.
Sunmagic® Vintage Lipstick Coneflower Care
Plant this coneflower in full sun to part sun, with the best flower production in full sun. Choose well-drained soil that’s moderately fertile, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 5.5–7.0. Avoid sites that stay wet after rain, since coneflowers dislike soggy roots.
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season, then switch to watering when the top 2 inches of soil are dry; established plants tolerate periodic drought. Feed once in early spring as new growth starts, using a light hand so you don’t stimulate leafy growth at the expense of flowers. In winter the top growth dies back and the crown rests, then new shoots emerge in spring.
Deadhead spent blooms through summer to keep buds forming, or let a few cones mature later for seed and structure. Cut the plant back to near ground level in late winter before the spring flush begins. If the clump gets crowded after a few seasons, divide in spring to maintain vigor and create additional planting groups.
Sunmagic® Vintage Lipstick Coneflower Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart for a solid planting that still allows airflow. In containers, use a 14–16 inch pot and a fast-draining mix so the crown stays dry between waterings. In the landscape, pair it with ornamental allium and catmint for a long run of pollinator activity and contrasting flower forms. For pots, combine it with annual vinca and coleus for a strong, early color base, then the coneflower carries the mid-to-late summer show.
