SunSparkler® Sapphire Tuffet Sedum flaunts smoky blue foliage that looks polished from spring onward, then it flips the script with hot pink flower clusters in fall. This compact stonecrop stays around 10–12 inches tall and 15–18 inches wide, fitting tight spaces at the front of the bed. Compared with many sedums that sprawl or open up by late summer, Sapphire Tuffet keeps a tighter, more upright clump and holds its shape in heat. We've been using it when a planting needs a “dark-leaf anchor” that stays low-maintenance.
This hardy, herbaceous sedum was bred for distinctive foliage color, compact habit, and showy late-season blooms. The succulent leaves tolerate drought and are typically ignored by deer, while the nectar-rich flowers pull in bees and butterflies right when many gardens start fading. Use it to edge a sunny path, stitch it into a rock garden, or repeat it in groups on a slope where you want coverage without constant irrigation. It also behaves well in pots, giving containers a season-long foliage base before the fall bloom show arrives.
SunSparkler® Sapphire Tuffet Sedum Care
Grow it in full sun to partial sun; more sun usually deepens foliage color and improves flowering. Plant in well-drained soil that can be average to lean, with a pH that’s generally flexible (about 6.0–7.8). Drainage is the non-negotiable piece, especially through winter.
Water regularly during the first growing season, then let the soil dry between soakings. Wrinkling leaves or slightly limp stems signal that it's time to water again. Skip heavy feeding because rich soil can make sedums stretch. A light application of a balanced fertilizer when new growth starts in spring is plenty if you fertilize at all. It dies back to the crown in winter and reappears from the base once temperatures warm.
Remove spent flower heads, or leave them through winter if you like the dried structure and trim them before new foliage pushes in spring. If stems get leggy late in the season, trim back to the leafy mound rather than shearing across the top. Every few years, you can divide the clump in spring to refresh vigor and create more plants for repeats.
SunSparkler® Sapphire Tuffet Sedum Spacing
Space plants 15–18 inches apart to form a clean, quilted edging without overcrowding. In containers, use a 12–16 inch pot with a gritty potting mix so it dries at a comfortable pace. In the landscape, pair it with coneflower and salvia so the sedum’s dark foliage sets off brighter blooms from summer into fall. For pots, combine it with petunias and sweet potato vines for a mix that keeps looking fresh even when temperatures run high.
