Suntacular Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hybrid ‘NCRH2’) brings height and saturated summer color to sunny gardens. Large daisy-like blooms open golden yellow with a rich bronze-orange eye from mid-summer into early fall. Unlike traditional rudbeckia that sprawl or lean, this selection forms a tall, columnar clump reaching about 30–34 inches high and 20–24 inches wide. Strong stems hold the flowers upright without staking—the perfect perennial for adding vertical interest toward the middle or back of a border.
This hybrid was selected for improved disease resistance and sturdy growth. The green foliage stays clean through heat and humidity, and the flowers attract butterflies without drawing much interest from deer. It tolerates summer drought once established and performs reliably in cottage gardens, prairie-style plantings, pollinator beds, and large mixed containers. The blooms also work well for cutting, holding their color in arrangements.
Suntacular Black-Eyed Susan Care
Plant in full sun for best flowering, providing at least six hours of direct light daily. It grows in average garden soil, including sandy or amended clay, as long as drainage is adequate. A slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal, but the plant is adaptable. Water thoroughly after planting and keep soil evenly moist during the first season. After establishment, water only during extended dry periods. In poor soils, apply a light dose of balanced granular fertilizer in spring, but avoid heavy feeding, which can encourage excess foliage at the expense of flowers.
Remove spent blooms to extend flowering. If plants begin to look tired late in the season, shear lightly to encourage fresh growth. Thinning older stems at the base in early spring keeps the clump vigorous. Leave seed heads standing into fall if you want added texture and wildlife interest.
Suntacular Black-Eyed Susan Spacing
Space plants 22–26 inches apart in beds or mass plantings to allow airflow and maintain a strong upright form. In larger groupings, stagger plants for a natural look rather than lining them up. For containers, use a pot at least 16–18 inches wide with well-drained potting mix. Combine with purple coneflower, Russian sage, ornamental grasses such as switchgrass, or trailing lantana to create a balanced, sun-loving container that handles heat and moderate drought with ease.
