There is something special about the Calibrachoa annual that makes gardeners return to it year after year for their flowering baskets or container gardens. Perhaps it is the bright colors, or the prolific number of blooms all over the foliage, or perhaps it is the continuous blooming habit it has, or the fact that it is a best seller and an award winner...must be all of the above and more! Want to have spring to fall blooms on your patio, porch or landscape? Get Superbells Lemon Slice Calibrachoa for your spring gardens this year! Bright yellow and white pinwheels cover dark green foliage all season long.

Native to open grasslands in South America, this petunia cousin blooms in full sun and requires a dry, well draining soil. It is an evergreen perennial in the hot summer sun in its native habitat, but United States gardeners use it as an annual due to its inability to survive cold winters. It is hardy in Zones 9 to 11 and grows in hot humid locations equally well. Planting out after the danger of the last frost has passed will give you months of color as this is a fast growing annual. These beautiful annuals will not flush out, or stop blooming when the summer heat arrives, they will keep on blooming for you, making them a preferred annual for baskets and containers. Its no wonder they are award winning best sellers!

Superbells® Lemon Slice® Calibrachoa Care

Care and maintenance of Calibrachoas are simple as long as you remember one thing...it will not tolerate a wet soggy soil. Well draining soil rich in organic material will give you the best results. Calibrachoa do not tolerate much variance in soil pH ranges, and prefer a range of 5.5 to 5.8, slightly acidic. This means it cannot take up nutrients properly when the soil pH range is off. Adding an application of chelated iron, either in granular form or as a foliar spray, will give the plant what it needs to once again use the nutrients from the soil they are in. As a heavy feeder, they will appreciate an application of a slow release fertilizer followed by a liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks. A full sun location with a light afternoon shade in the hottest sun regions is appreciated and will give you the best flower production. Water regularly when the top of the soil is dry, allowing it to dry out between watering just a little.

Deadheading is not required for a good bloom production, but shearing lightly after flowers fade at the end of summer may result in a rebloom, especially if coupled with an application of fertilizer to set you up for a great fall presentation. Pruning plants when first established will encourage additional branching which means even more flowers. Bees and butterflies will be frequent visitors to your porch or patio when you plant these lovely annuals. If your plants start to get leggy or look tired, prune them by up to ⅓ of the plant volume for a complete refresh and to promote new strong growth.

Superbells® Lemon Slice® Calibrachoa Spacing

Space your plants about 8 to 12 inches apart to give them room to grow. These are fast growing annuals and will quickly fill your container or basket with fresh foliage and dozens of blooms. Growing to about 12 inches tall and spreading out to 24 inches wide, Calibrachoas make a great companion to other spring to fall blooming annuals in containers, or you can plant them in your landscape, creating huge drifts of color to enjoy all season long. If your native garden soil does not drain fast enough, you may consider planting them in raised beds to get that all important aspect that guarantees success with these annual beauties.
