SuperCal® Premium Yellow Sun Petchoa (Petunia x Calibrachoa hybrid 'SAKPXC029') delivers a cheery show of golden-yellow blooms, lighting up gardens and patio containers from spring until the first hard frost. This hybrid unites the best qualities of petunias and calibrachoas, presenting larger petals that hold their color through sweltering days and unexpected chills. Gardeners appreciate its ability to shrug off summer heat while continuing to color the landscape. In our experience, this petchoa’s non-sticky foliage and rapid growth habit make it a welcome, low-maintenance choice for sunny beds or hanging baskets.
SuperCal® Premium Yellow Sun Petchoa is known for its longevity in hot conditions and shows good disease resistance, meaning fewer interventions through the growing season. The mounded form fills empty spaces quickly, offering a practical solution for front borders or as a “spiller” in mixed containers. Many admire its bright presence near entryways where the golden hue can catch the eye of passersby. Originally bred by Sakata, this Petchoa performs well in climates that challenge ordinary petunias.
SuperCal® Premium Yellow Sun Petchoa Care
Plant after the last frost date in mildly acidic to neutral, well-draining soil. A spot receiving at least six hours of daily sun fosters strong flowering, although part sun is acceptable if direct light is consistent. Water when the topsoil feels dry, being cautious not to leave roots saturated. Fertilize monthly with a balanced formula, keeping an eye on foliage color as an indicator of nutrient needs.
Pruning away leggy or faded stems in midseason refreshes the plant and encourages a new flush of buds. Containers require slightly more frequent watering due to faster evaporation; situate them where rain and full light can reach. In climates with mild winters, leaving the plant sheltered outdoors might allow extra weeks of color, though petchoa is generally grown as an annual. If you’re overwintering indoors, place it near a sunny window and reduce watering to avoid excessive moisture.
SuperCal® Premium Yellow Sun Petchoa Spacing
Arrange plants 14 to 22 inches apart in garden beds to prevent overcrowding and encourage good airflow. A container width of at least 12 inches offers enough room for root development when setting up a new planting.
