Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree grows straight up instead of spreading wide, so small-space gardeners can easily harvest crisp red apples. This columnar apple, Malus 'UEB 3449-1', reaches about 8 to 10 feet tall and only 2 to 3 feet wide, making it a natural fit for patios, narrow borders, edible hedges, sunny side yards, and large containers. Pink spring flowers lead to medium-sized red apples with sweet, juicy flesh and a slightly tart finish for snacking, baking, canning, and fall desserts. We recommend planting it where guests can see it up close, because the skinny form covered in apples tends to start conversations before the first fruit is picked.
Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree Care
Plant Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree in full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct light daily, in enriched, well-drained loamy soil with a pH around 5.5 to 7.5. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, set the graft union above the soil line, backfill with native soil amended with compost, then water deeply to settle the roots. Space trees 5 to 6 feet apart for individual plants, or closer at about 2 to 3 feet apart for a narrow fruiting hedge if pruning and airflow are maintained.
Prune during dormancy to remove dead, damaged, or crossing growth. Tip back any overly vigorous shoots to preserve the slim column, but avoid heavy heading cuts. Thin fruit at marble size to one apple every 4–6 inches for better apple size and branch health.
Growing Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree
Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree can begin bearing fruit 1 to 2 years after planting, with apples typically ripening in September. This variety is not self-pollinating, so plant another compatible apple within 50 feet, such as Blushing Delight™, Golden Treat™, or Tangy Green™, for good fruit set. Spring blossoms feed pollinators, and bees will move pollen between trees when bloom times overlap.
Pick apples when the red color is well developed and the fruit releases with a gentle lift and twist. Enjoy them fresh, bake them into crisps and pies, or store sound fruit in a cool location for later use.
Growing Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree in Containers
Choose a large container at least 18 to 24 inches wide with drainage holes and a stable base that will not tip when the narrow canopy carries fruit. Use a high-quality potting mix blended for outdoor trees or fruiting plants. Place the pot in full sun and position a compatible apple variety nearby so pollination can occur. Repot every 2 to 3 years in early spring, or refresh the top layer of mix and root-prune lightly when the tree is already in a large container. Container-grown apples need steady moisture and winter root protection in colder regions.
Watering Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree
Water deeply once or twice per week during the first growing season, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Mature trees need regular moisture from bloom to fruit fill, and signs like leaf curl, early fruit drop, or apples cracking after dry spells can point to uneven watering.
Feeding Tasty Red™ Fruit Snacks™ Apple Tree
Feed in early spring with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer or slow-release 10-10-10 before new growth begins. Skip heavy nitrogen after early summer, since too much leafy growth can reduce fruiting and make the tree less prepared for winter.
