Treasure Trove black-eyed Susan offers classic golden blooms without foliage collapse from leaf spot by midsummer. This tall, mounded perennial reaches about 32–38 inches tall and 36–42 inches wide, filling out into a substantial clump that looks established fast. It outperforms many rudbeckias by staying noticeably cleaner thanks to strong Septoria leaf spot resistance while still flowering hard from late summer through fall. We’ve found it earns its keep in mass plantings because the branching stems keep the color coming even when the weather turns hot.
This Rudbeckia hybrid is a North American native-type perennial selected for vigorous growth, long bloom, and dependable landscape longevity. The large, golden yellow, starry flowers sit over a robust canopy of big green leaves. The seed heads that follow add fall and early winter interest for birds if you leave them in place. Use it as a sunny drift behind shorter perennials, a repeatable color block along a fence line, or a dependable cut-flower garden. It also handles summer heat well and typically resists browsing from deer and rabbits once it’s growing strongly.
Treasure Trove Black-Eyed Susan Care
Plant in full sun to part sun, with heaviest flowering in full sun. It prefers loose, well-drained soil and tolerates acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions, roughly pH 5.5–7.5. Keep it out of spots that stay soggy after rain, since drainage matters more than soil richness.
Water regularly during the first season, then shift to soaking only when the top few inches of soil dry and the foliage looks slightly less perky in the afternoon. Go easy on fertilizer in average soils because excess feeding can push softer stems. A light spring application of a balanced slow-release feed is plenty if growth is thin. After hard frost, the top growth dies back and the crown overwinters, returning from the base when soil warms in spring.
Deadhead through the main bloom period if you want the longest run of flowers, or stop deadheading late in the season so the dark cones can dry and feed birds. In early spring, cut stems back to a few inches above the crown before new growth elongates. If the clump gets crowded after several years, lift and divide in spring to refresh vigor and reset spacing.
Treasure Trove Black-Eyed Susan Spacing
Space plants 36–42 inches apart to let the clump widen without shading its own base. In containers, use a 16–20 inch pot and treat it as the filler that carries late-season color once summer annuals slow down.
In the ground, weave it with daylily and goldenrod to echo the warm yellow with airy texture and late-season structure, then tuck in asters nearby so the border keeps momentum into fall. For a patio mix, pair it with calibrachoa and coleus so you get steady foliage contrast early, then let the rudbeckia take over when it starts blooming.
