If you are looking for a highly decorative and productive strawberry for your kitchen garden, then Tristan Strawberry is the plant for you. This Fragaria ananassa ‘Tristan’ is an everbearing type of strawberry, producing lovely long, cone-shaped fruit all summer. The flowers are not the typical white, but instead are a gorgeous shade of pink. The compact plants will begin producing tasty berries 90 days from transplanting in the first year and do not send out runner shoots.

Tristan Strawberry Care

Strawberries prefer a location with full sun and rich soil; add compost or feed with a fertilizer if you have poor soil. Good drainage is vital year-round. Everbearing strawberries can be harvested the first year without special pinching out of flowers. The harvest is consistent for months and is best used fresh. Space plants 10 inches apart on the center when planting in a raised bed or in the ground.

Growing Tristan Strawberry

Tristan is a compact plant perfect for smaller gardens or container growing. Plant strawberries out after all danger of frost is over in the spring. Mulching around the plants with fresh straw or arborist chips will keep the soil cool around the root system while helping to keep mud from splashing onto plants or fruit during rainy periods. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are perfect for use in strawberry beds. The roots are efficiently watered while keeping the foliage dry. Adding timers to the irrigation system makes this food crop even lower maintenance.

Grow Tristan in a container or even a hanging basket. The lack of daughter runner plants keeps the plants easy to contain in smaller areas with almost no pruning. Use a pot with excellent drainage and at least a 10-inch diameter for a single plant or 16 inches for a planting of three. Tristan strawberry has such a beautiful and unusual flower that it is a natural thriller element in a mixed planting. Add other annuals, such as alyssum or nasturtiums, to the edge of the pot for a spiller and filler element. Strawberries are perennial crops and require repotting in the spring with fresh soil-based potting mix to remain vigorous growers.

Watering Tristan Strawberry

Allow strawberries in a container or the ground to dry out slightly between waterings. The top 1-2 inches of soil should feel dry. Water weekly with one inch of either natural rain or supplemental irrigation.

Feeding Tristan Strawberry

Liquid seaweed or fish emulsion is the best organic choice for feeding strawberries. Liquid fertilizer is especially easy for feeding strawberries in hanging baskets and containers. Feed every two weeks from April to August. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for dosage.

    Tristan...

Posted by Karen Chapman on Jun 01, 2023

I am happy the plants arrived finally. They were packaged wonderfully, but arrived in shock & beginning to mold…so I have been nursing them, trying to encourage them back to health. 2 seem to b doing fair, the 3rd plant is questionable.
