Urge to Splurge Spurge (Euphorbia) is the kind of perennial you plant once and then wonder why more plants can’t behave this well. It shows up right after frost with chartreuse-yellow bracts, then rolls straight into blue-green summer foliage and finishes in red-bronze fall tones. It reaches about 22–26 inches tall but sprawls into a bold, 42–48 inch wide mound, so it fills space like a small foundation shrub while still reading as a perennial. We are fond of it for gardens that need an early “wake-up” plant that still looks intentional by August.
This spurge is built for heat, drought, and even salty conditions, and is useful where irrigation is inconsistent or soil is lean. The milky sap makes it reliably deer and rabbit resistant, and the spring bloom period pulls in bees and butterflies when few other perennials are offering much. Because it forms a broad, mounded silhouette, it works as a repeating anchor through sunny borders, low hedge along walkways, or single specimen that gives structure to xeric plantings. Stems also cut well for arrangements to add chartreuse notes indoors (handle with care, since the sap can irritate skin).
Urge to Splurge Spurge Care
Give it full sun for the strongest flowering and best foliage color. Partial sun is also acceptable, especially where summers run hot. Use sharply well-drained soil, and aim for a neutral to slightly alkaline pH if you can. To water, soak the root zone, then let the top few inches dry before watering again; after the first season this spurge can handle low water. Fertilizer should be minimal, because rich feeding can push soft growth. A light spring application of a balanced slow-release feed is plenty if your soil is very lean.
Cut the entire plant back in early spring before new shoots appear to encourage a fuller mound and heavier bract display. Wear gloves when pruning or cutting stems, and avoid touching your eyes after handling. If stems flop outward after flowering in fertile soil, a midseason light trim can tighten the outline, but don’t shear into old woody portions. In colder, exposed sites, protection from harsh wind helps prevent winter desiccation.
Urge to Splurge Spurge Spacing
Space plants 42–48 inches apart so the mature mound can expand without swallowing neighbors. For containers, choose a pot at least 20–24 inches wide and keep the mix gritty so the crown never sits wet.
In the landscape, pair it with sedum and Russian sage, which also require sun, lean soil, and drying out between deep waterings. For containers, use sedum to rim the pot and trail over the edge, then add verbena for a long-blooming accent that can take the heat while the spurge carries the structure.
