Violets are Blue Bee Delphinium brings that classic delphinium height without the usual babysitting, thanks to sturdy, self-supporting stems. This Delphinium elatum sends up violet-blue spires with a crisp white bee, so the color looks clean from across the yard. Expect a mature size around 30–36 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide. We suggest you place it where you’ll see it often—near a path or patio—because those white-centered flowers feel special up close.
The flower spikes carry a light fragrance and pull in bees and butterflies, which makes the planting feel busy in the best way. This hybrid is typically deer and rabbit resistant, a big plus for woodland borders. It shines in early summer and can keep interest going beyond the first flush when conditions are good. Use it as a middle-of-border anchor, weave it through a cottage-style bed, or plant it as the “thriller” in a large container where the spires can stand tall behind lower bloomers.
Violets are Blue Bee Delphinium Care
Give it full sun to part sun (6+ hours is ideal, with a little afternoon relief in warmer spots) and plant with the crown level with the soil surface to avoid rot. This delphinium prefers rich, well-drained soil that holds moisture but never stays soggy. A neutral to alkaline pH (about 7.0–8.0) suits it best, and garden lime can help if your soil runs acidic. Water deeply at planting, then keep moisture steady during active growth—let the surface dry slightly between waterings, but don’t allow repeated drought stress while spikes are forming. A spring top-dressing of compost plus a balanced slow-release fertilizer supports stronger stems and better flowering.
After the main bloom, cut the spent flower stalks back to a leafy set of growth to tidy the plant and encourage fresh growth for later-season presence. In windy gardens, add a discreet ring support early so you never have to wrestle stems mid-bloom. Leave a short framework of stems going into winter, then cut back hard in early spring as new shoots appear.
Violets are Blue Bee Delphinium Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart so air moves through the foliage and the clump can widen naturally. For containers, start with a 16–20 inch diameter pot (or larger) and use a heavy container mix to keep the planting stable once the spikes rise. In the landscape, pair it with allium for early-season structure, catmint to soften the base with a low haze of bloom, and Shasta daisies to echo the clean white “bee” later in the season. For a container combo, try petunias, coleus, and verbena for interesting contrast and pollinator appeal.
