Astilbe is an excellent choice for moist, shady gardens. The brilliant white flower tufts of Visions in White Astilbe will brighten any dark corner of the garden early in the summer. Visions in White is a mid-season bloomer that retains its compact and dark bronzy foliage through the summer. Even though this astilbe only produces one flush of flowers, they remain fresh for weeks, and provide interest even when dried. Astilbe chinensis ‘Visions in White’ is a good choice for attracting bees and butterflies to the garden and does not overly self-seed.

The compact size of this herbaceous perennial works well in a small, shaded garden or as a filler for a mixed seasonal container planting. Deer tend to leave astilbe alone in favor of more tender foliage. The unusual, fine-textured, bronzy-green foliage is a terrific contrast to other broadleaved perennials such as hosta, bears breeches, and barrenwort.

Visions in White Astilbe Care

Plant astilbe in well-draining soil that retains moisture. One inch of water is required per week to keep this perennial happy and lush. Mulches of organic compost or finely shredded arborist chips will help retain moisture and improve the texture of the soil. Fertilize early in spring with a balanced, granular formulation. An NPK ratio of 10-10-10 is ideal and will provide enough nutrition for a season of strong growth. Regular watering helps astilbe continue flowering longer in the season.

Astilbes are one of the first perennials to die back and will begin to turn brown when the heat of summer sets in. Cut back spent top growth after it has withered and turned brown. This will help to protect the crown from any damage. The following season's shoots may appear in the fall and can be mulched with 2-3 inches of compost or finely shredded leaves for added winter insulation. Remove any mulch from the crown early in the spring to prevent the rotting of new shoots.

Visions in White Astilbe Spacing

The mature height of Visions in White is 20-28 inches with a spread of 12-18 inches. Space plants 12 inches apart when planting multiples. Astilbe will require a pot with at least a 10-inch diameter and excellent drainage for container growing.
