West Country™ Persian Slipper Lupine (Lupinus poly. West Country™ 'Persian Slipper') is a quick growing perennial with dazzling flower spikes. The flower spikes are covered in clusters of bright violet blooms from late spring to early summer. Grown in USDA hardiness zones 4-9, this plant can reach 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide.
This plant has sturdy stems and an upright growth habit, making it perfect for planting in the back of flower beds behind shorter plants. West Country™ Persian Slipper Lupine has good deer and rabbit resistance. It also provides nectar for pollinators, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
West Country™ Persian Slipper Lupine Care
The ideal amount of sun for West Country™ Persian Slipper Lupine is at least 6 hours a day to maximize blooming. This plant prefers slightly acidic soil. The soil should be a nutrient-rich blend with good drainage. Water this plant regularly to keep the soil slightly moist, and avoid overhead watering. To keep roots cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, provide a few inches of mulch over the lupine’s flower bed.
Remove the spent flower spikes throughout spring and summer to encourage reblooming. In order to rejuvenate the plant, it may be pruned hard after blooming. Either in early spring or late autumn, cut back all stems to a height of about 6 inches.
West Country™ Persian Slipper Lupine Spacing
Space Persian Slipper Lupine plants about 24 inches apart for best results. In patio containers, this plant can be spaced more closely together.
