Westcountry™ Salmon Star Lupine commands attention with densely packed, coppery salmon bloom spikes that shift from warm pink to glowing orange as they mature. It rises 24–36 inches tall with sturdy, upright stems that resist flopping far better than older seed strains. The Westcountry™ series is known for thicker flower spikes and improved stem strength, giving you a cleaner vertical accent and longer-lasting cut flowers. Each plant forms a full 24-inch clump, making it substantial enough to anchor a late-spring border.

Blooming in late May through early June, Lupinus polyphyllus ‘Salmon Star’ attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while remaining unappealing to deer and rabbits. The palmate green foliage creates a lush base that supports the bold spikes without looking sparse. Its upright habit makes it ideal for mass plantings, sunny cottage gardens, and a strong focal point behind lower perennials. Because the stems are thick and straight, it also excels as a dramatic cut flower.

Westcountry™ Salmon Star Lupine Care

Plant lupine in full sun to part sun, ensuring at least six hours of direct light for best flowering. Soil should be well-drained and slightly acidic, ideally with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Avoid heavy clay that holds excess moisture, especially in winter, as lupines dislike wet feet. Water consistently during active growth, keeping soil evenly moist but never saturated. A light mulch layer helps regulate soil temperature and retain moisture without crowding the crown.

Deadhead spent flower spikes promptly to encourage side shoots and potential rebloom. Cut stems back to the base after flowering finishes to tidy the plant and direct energy into root development. In colder climates, apply winter mulch after the ground freezes to prevent frost heaving. Avoid frequent transplanting, as lupines develop deep roots that prefer to remain undisturbed.

Westcountry™ Salmon Star Lupine Spacing

Space plants 24 inches apart to allow air circulation and room for mature clumps to develop fully. For containers, choose a pot at least 14–16 inches wide with sharp drainage.

We recommend planting Westcountry™ Salmon Star Lupine where its saturated color can bridge pastel spring blooms and the brighter tones of early summer. Pair with irises and columbine for a layered late-spring display with complementary vertical lines. For a bold border combination, plant alongside peonies and salvia to extend color and provide contrasting flower forms.
