Wittem Dahlia Bulbs features white blooms with a light lilac wash that looks hand-brushed. The fully double 4- to 6-inch flowers stand on sturdy stems that can reach 36 to 48 inches in good garden conditions. The pale coloring makes it easy to blend with pink, lavender, silver, and white plantings. Our landscape designer uses this dahlia when a border needs a softer cut flower that still has enough size to hold attention.

This decorative dahlia has a refined Dutch-bred look and flowers from midsummer until frost. Its strong stems are useful for cutting, and the plant’s upright habit gives structure to sunny beds and large patio containers. Dahlias are tender perennials that thrive through warm weather, then go dormant when frost arrives. Use Wittem Dahlia Bulbs in cutting gardens, white borders, romantic container groupings, or mixed beds where pale flowers can cool down stronger summer colors.

Wittem Dahlia Bulbs Care

Plant Wittem Dahlia Bulbs in full sun to partial shade, with the best flowering in at least 6 hours of direct sun. Use fertile, well-drained soil such as amended loam, and avoid sites where water collects around the tubers. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, about 6.2 to 7.0, supports sturdy stems and steady bud production.

Wait until spring soil is warm and frost risk has passed before planting. Water lightly at planting, then hold off on heavy watering until shoots appear above the soil. Once plants are growing, water deeply when the soil feels dry a few inches down, especially during bud set and hot spells. Feed with a low-nitrogen bloom fertilizer during active growth, and mulch after shoots are established to keep soil moisture more even.

Pinch young plants when they are about 10 to 12 inches tall to encourage branching and more flowering stems. Remove spent blooms often by cutting back to a leaf node, not just below the flower head. In zones 3 to 8, lift tubers after frost darkens the foliage, dry them for several days, and store them in barely moist peat moss or vermiculite in a cool frost-free location.

Wittem Dahlia Bulbs Spacing

Give Wittem Dahlia Bulbs 12 to 18 inches of spacing in beds, or more room if growing them for cutting with wide access paths. Plant tubers 1 to 2 inches deep with the crown near the soil surface and the growing eye facing up. For containers, choose a heavy 16- to 20-inch pot with drainage holes, since blooming stems can make lightweight pots top-heavy.

Companion Planting

In containers, pair Wittem Dahlia Bulbs with petunias, sweet potato vines, or vinca to create lower color and foliage around the upright dahlia stems. In garden beds, catmint is a strong partner because its airy lavender-blue flowers contrast with Wittem’s white blooms and tolerate sunny, well-drained soil. Marigold adds warm lower color and helps fill gaps near the base, and bluebeard offers late-season flowers that carry the planting after the first dahlia flush.
