Woods Pink Aster, New York Aster ‘Wood’s Pink’, Michaelmas Daisy ‘Wood’s Pink’, Aster dumosus ‘Wood’s Pink’, or Aster Wood’s Pink is a vigorous, herbaceous perennial with stunning pink, daisy-like flowers with masses of silky, oblong petals and sunny yellow centers. They bloom in late summer to early fall and are an excellent choice for late-season color and interest. Their foliage is vivid green and finely textured. They grow from 12 to 15 inches tall and have a spread of 18 to 24 inches.
Wood’s Pink Aster is a tight-clumping alpine native with a tidy, mounding habit. It is incredibly resistant to mildew and attracts kaleidoscopes of butterflies. It is deer and rabbit resistant, and is a favorite of florists as a hardy, durable, long-lasting cut flower. This beautiful wildflower is tolerant of extreme cold and looks great in a structured garden, as well as a natural woodland landscape.
Wood’s Pink Aster Care
The ideal growing conditions for your Wood's Pink Aster are in areas with full to partial sun. They need average water and although they can adapt to many types of soils, they perform best in fertile soil that is well drained and rich in organic matter. Wood’s Pink Aster can grow in drought and wet soil, and is even tolerant to salt, which makes them ideal in coastal communities. Aster can be divided every two years. It should be fertilized in the spring with flower and rose food.
Wood’s Pink Aster Spacing
You should space your Wood's Pink Aster from 12 to 18 inches apart. They are great for edging and creating colorful highlights in any small or rocky garden. Ideal as container plants, the Woods Pink Aster is commonly used as both a “filler” and a “thriller”. They are a must in butterfly gardens, coastal landscaping, and cottage gardens. Asters pair well with Chrysanthemums, Daisies, and Coneflower.
