Astilbe perennials produce an array of beautiful flowers in colors ranging from white, pink, deep red, soft lavender, and even violet. The color will vary based on the type. Because there are different types of astilbes, not all will produce flowers at the same time. Most will grow flowers anywhere from early spring to late summer.

Common Reasons Why Astilbe Isn’t Blooming
Several reasons can explain why an astilbe isn’t blooming. One possibility is that the soil isn’t adequate for your perennial. Astilbe likes acidic soil. Because the pH of the soil is bound to change based on how it’s managed, it’s possible that even though the soil was perfect at first, it may not be now. Additionally, dry soil can also prevent flower growth.
Another possibility is weather and exposure to sunlight. Astilbe plants prefer some shade and no more than 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. If your perennial is exposed to too much sun, that may hinder its growth and ability to produce flowering buds.
Other possibilities include not feeding your astilbe with the right fertilizer for its needs.
Pruning Astilbe To Help It Bloom
Unfortunately, pruning flower heads will not help with reblooming. However, doing so won’t harm the plant either. Deadheading also will not encourage new flowers. If you want to prune simply to boost the appearance of your perennial, you can do so. You can prune any dead-looking flowers as well as any dry or brown leaves.
Fertilizing Astilbe To Help It Bloom
A simple way to give your astilbe a higher chance of successfully blooming is to use a phosphorus-rich fertilizer. The best option for this plant is one with makeup of 5-10-5 or 10-10-10. You should use it every year during the springtime when the soil has an adequate amount of moisture. Apply the fertilizer directly onto the soil, being careful not to get any on the leaves. This is because if the leaves are wet and you get fertilizer on them, it will stick to the leaves which can lead to chemical burns on your astilbe.
Get Astilbe To Produce More Blooms
If your astilbe is not producing enough blooms, consider the reasons mentioned above. Check the soil pH. If it is not acidic enough, you may need to add aluminum sulfate or peat moss to the surrounding soil. Make sure it is getting just enough sunlight but not more than 6 hours daily. Lastly, get the right fertilizer and use it every year during spring.
