Chalet® Glowing Pink is a newer Korean Azalea introduced in the 1990s. It is the hardiest Azalea that can grow in USDA zones 4-9 and bloom reliably. The flowers look like they glow against dense, green foliage. Blooms of brilliant pink with raspberry leopard spotting make a backdrop for spring-blooming bulbs and early perennials. This low-growing, spreading shrub is perfect for smaller gardens.
Azalea x poukhanense is fragrant when in bloom and does a great job attracting early beneficial pollinators to the garden. Rabbit damage is rarely an issue. Korean Azalea has good resistance to phytophthora root disease and can bounce back from light deer browsing. The foliage turns a deep purple in the fall and stays on the plant in all but the coldest growing zones. The versatile Chalet® Glowing Pink Azalea gives 4 season interest plant in a large group as a foundation planting or the anchor plant for a spring bulb garden.
Chalet® Glowing Pink Azalea Care
Azaleas need soil that is acidic, rich, and well-draining. The roots of Azaleas do not like to sit in water and are susceptible to root rot over the winter in cold, wet soils. Chalet® is at home in full sun to part shade, although Azaleas growing in the warmest growing zones will require protection from midday sun and late afternoon heat. Regular watering through the spring and summer helps Azaleas form flower buds for the following year; continue watering through the fall in dry years. Fertilize the shrubs with a slow-release feed formulated for acid-loving shrubs in the early spring.
Dwarf Korean Azaleas are relatively slow growing and do not require much pruning to keep them in shape. Pruning should only be done after blooming has finished in the late spring. Pruning in the late winter will result in poor or no blooming since the flower buds are formed on the previous year's growth. Chalet® Glowing Pink Azalea is multi-stemmed and can be rejuvenated if the top growth gets too leggy and sparse. Hard pruning should be done early in the spring to encourage vigorous new growth. Only remove one-third of the overall growth in one season.
Chalet® Glowing Pink Azalea Spacing
The low-spreading habit of Chalet® Glowing Pink Azalea makes this shrub an excellent element for the front of a border or a container-grown specimen shrub. The mature height and width are 3-4 feet. Space plants at 3 feet on the center. Containers need to have a diameter of at least 12 inches.
