Thin petals give the Common New England Aster a feathery texture, while the deep pink hue adds a pop of color. The Aster n.a. Alma Potschke features a branched structure and is a robust bloomer that will put on a dazzling display with buds emerging in early August and flowers opening by the end of the month and lasting into September. This mounded perennial will be covered in 1- to 2-inch wide flowers during the blooming cycle. This plant also features thin, dark green foliage.
Aster is a wonderful plant to feature in beds, mass plantings, or borders. Trim the tall stems to feature the darling daisy-like blooms in arrangements. This plant is native to the eastern U.S., and butterflies flock to the blooms for the nectar while birds visit when the flowers go to seed. Grow this plant as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Common New England Aster Care
Plant in rich soil that is moist but well-drained. The ideal spot will receive full sunlight or at least 6 hours of light per day. Water weekly or when the top several inches of soil dries out. As a native plant, the Common New England Aster is rather low maintenance once established.
Fertilizing is not generally necessary when grown in rich soil. A layer of organic compost can replenish the soil and support healthy growth or apply a balanced fertilizer in the spring. Trim back the growth in the fall after the flowers die back.
Common New England Aster Spacing
This is an upright, mounded perennial that will grow 30 to 40 inches tall and wide. Create a full, meadow-like effect by spacing plants 30 to 40 inches apart.
