This long-lasting native perennial grass will brighten up any garden with long-lasting, graceful mounds of shiny green foliage. Incredibly low maintenance, Creek Sedge Grass will attract butterflies and wildlife galore and is perfect for mass planting in shady areas, accenting a garden path, and bringing the essence of the woodlands right into your landscape. This grass is very versatile and thrives in wetland areas. This grass is also deer resistant and attractive to desirable wildlife, as it is non-toxic to animals, and the seeds are a favorite snack for any turtles visiting your garden!
Hardy in zones 3 through 9, Sedge Creek Grass flowers in the spring, boasting flowering stems with delicate shaggy flowers accented against foot-long leaves less than 1/8th of an inch wide. This foliage is semi-evergreen and particularly radiant during spring and summer. This grass will expand through rhizomal roots, becoming more prominent every year. Due to its wetland nature, it is also moisture tolerant and somewhat drought tolerant once established.
Creek Sedge Grass Care
Plant this grass in the fall in moist, well-drained soil or near the edge of a body of water. It will thrive in an area with full shade but will adapt to sites with a bit more sun. Water this grass often if not planted near a body of water, especially during the summer. Check the top inch of soil with your fingertip and water if it feels dry, soaking the soil about two times a week. This grass is a remarkably light feeder and should only need fertilization if the soil is deficient in nutrients. In this case, use a well-balanced, slow-release 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer. Use this grass as filler in a container that is at least a couple of inches larger than the root ball, and use potting soil with plenty of drainage.
In the spring, cut back the foliage to keep Creek Sedge looking tidy once the blooming period is over. In the winter, only a little care is needed. Add an optional layer of mulch around the plant to keep its root system protected. For watering, a drip irrigation system is ideal for getting this grass the perfect amount of water while reducing evaporation.
Creek Sedge Grass Spacing
Sedge Creek Grass reaches a mature height and width of 8 to 12 inches in 2 years. When planting en masse, space each grass about 10 inches apart.
