Spireas are among the most popular shrubs for home gardeners because they are easy-care and versatile plants. Double Play Artisan Spirea (Spirea japonica 'Galen') is destined to top the list of favorites. The colorful mounded shrub displays red foliage as the leaves emerge after winter and follows this display with numerous fuchsia-colored blooms from spring through summer. Its mounded shape, low height and colorful growth make Double Play a perfect container thriller or border plant in the landscape.
Double Play Artisan Spirea grows to about 30 inches tall and wide while maintaining a pretty mounded form. Its pink flowers attract hummingbirds, but deer tend to leave the shrub alone. Although the shrub's leaves drop in winter, the new growth rewards you with red color in early spring, eventually turning green. The plant can add colorful height to a container but also work as a low border plant along driveways, sidewalks or garden beds.
Double Play Artisan Spirea Care
Plant Double Play Artisan Spirea in partial or full sun (making sure the shrub receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sun a day for best growth and color). The shrub is cold hardy down to zone 3 and heat hardy through zone 8. Apply a controlled-release fertilizer in the spring to help encourage blooming. You can trim the shrub or deadhead the flowers after blooming to encourage new growth and flowering.
Double Play Artisan Spirea Spacing
Be sure to place your Double Play Artisan Spirea shrubs where you can enjoy the colorful new leaf growth in early spring and pink flowers in spring and summer. If you plant a border of several of these shrubs, space the plants 2.5 to 3 feet apart.
