- Use As A Thriller In Containers
The Double Scoop™ Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower is an Echinacea hybrid that introduces a bold pop of color to a landscape. The multitude of vibrant double flowers are stunning and long-lasting. The long outer petals narrow slightly near the tip and feature notched ends. The shorter inner petals surround the seed cone and have the same notched ends but are slightly curved. The dark eye stands out against the hot pink flowers.
The flowers stand on tall, branched stems that feature dark green foliage. Use this perennial to add color to a bed or border. Create a stunning mass planting that only consists of coneflowers, or use this plant as a thriller in a container. Coneflowers produce a lot of nectar, making them popular with pollinators. Foragers like deer do not favor these plants, so they are a good pick in areas with large deer populations. The Double Scoop™ Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower is heat and drought tolerant, allowing it to look amazing all summer.
Double Scoop™ Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower Care
Plant the Double Scoop™ Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower in neutral, moist but well-drained soil. Coneflowers need at least six hours of daily sunlight. These plants can handle some shade, but they thrive in full sun. Regular water keeps the plants healthy and blooming, so water weekly for best results. A layer of organic compost applied each spring gives the plants the nutrients necessary for continued growth. Over-fertilizing causes leggy growth.
Deadhead the plant to encourage more flowers and extend the bloom cycle as long as possible. If left in place, birds and small animals will feed on the seed pods. You can remove the growth to ground level after the first frost or cut back dead growth in early spring.
Double Scoop™ Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower Spacing
The showy Double Scoop™ Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower stands 22 to 24 inches tall and spreads 18 to 20 inches wide. Space plants 20 to 22 inches apart.
